Warner Bros The Thing from Another World (1951)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JJPY23S...118_SY170_QL70

Quote:
Arctic researchers discover a huge, frozen spaceling inside a crash-landed UFO, then fight for their lives after the murderous being (a pre-Gunsmoke James Arness) emerges from icy captivity. Will other creatures soon follow? The famed final words of this film are both warning and answer: “Keep watching the skies!” A snappy ensemble. An eerie theremin-infused Dimitri Tiomkin score. Rising suspense. Crisp Christian Nyby direction. All merge in an edgy classic produced by Howard Hawks (Bringing Up Baby, Rio Bravo) and filled with Hawksian trademarks of rapid-fire dialogue and of people united by do-or-die stress. Keep watching the skies and the screen. Don’t miss a moment of “one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the ‘50s” (John Stanley, Creature Features).

Can't wait to see one of the sickest full-body burns of all time in HD.

Well, the entire issue with The Thing has been that the elements for the longer version are lost, so it will be a patchwork between 35mm elements and 16mm elements, probably. So people shouldn't expect it to look that great, or that consistent, but it's good to have it. Probably why it's an Archive title and not a regular WB edition.

Although I could be wrong but many believe Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? May have been an older HD master. I guess there could be a couple exceptions.

Overall thrilled with WB Archive BLU output which IMO is better than your standard WB sell thru BLU.

Oh I'm definitely not expecting it to look amazing, just don't want all that scanner noise present in the Japanese release!

If you're right (that this will be a 35mm/16mm composite) then this would be the first crack in WAC's policy of perfection on Blu-Ray or nothing at all. Which would be a good thing for tons of films whose extant elements preclude a "perfect" presentation.

Unless they go with the shorter version, in which case, nfm.

Well, I don't know if I'm right, I just know that's been the holdup for them not releasing it years ago. They specifically said the elements weren't good enough, so maybe they found something better.

At some point though, it's as good as it can be, I guess. Maybe the will include 2 cuts, the shorter from 35mm and the longer from 16mm. Curious to see.
