Picnic at Hanging Rock Blu-ray Review

It looks like Second Sight will be releasing Picnic At Hanging Rock: The Director's Cut, on UK Blu-ray, this summer.

Play have it listed for release on 26/07/2010, and the listing on Play even mentions what special features will be included.

The BVA's website also has the Blu-ray down for release.

Am I right in thinking, that this title has yet to be formally announced for release on Blu-ray anywhere?

What's the likelihood of a brand new, high-def master being created for this Blu-ray release?

It'd be a total travesty if Second Sight were to use some crappy, pre-existing, edge enhanced, grain-scrubbed, abomination of a master for this Blu-ray release.

Do Second Sight usually region code their Blu-rays?

Is anyone else looking forward to this release?

It's just this week been released in Australia via Umbrella Ent. It's been remastered and had new docs on it too. Mine's on the way, Hopefully be here by the weekend.

Oh, kewl! I didn't know it was out in Australia already.

Have there been any reviews of the Aussie Blu posted anywhere?

Thanks for the info.

Great film -a lot of work needed on the Blu-ray so I hope they've done it well!

DVDBeaver.com has one that just got posted today! Looks good, but I need to see more about this "defect mark".

Yes, I've had a look at that, ta.

I'm wondering whether Second Sight will simply release a clone of the Aussie BD. The listing for the UK Blu on Play mentions extra features that are not on the Aussie Blu, so possibly not.

I too am concerned about the "defect" the review talks about.

What is the difference between the theatrical and director's cut of Picnic At Hanging Rock?

I posted about this in another thread... but, the original cut has about 7 minutes of material chopped out in the "director's cut" (actually, they're BOTH director's cuts... it's not like anyone made Peter Weir release a longer version of the film at the time). In my opinion, the longer cut is better.

I'm also concerned about the aspect ratio. I have the full-frame Japanese laserdisc, and the framing looks correct (i.e., not "open mat"). I have a sneaking suspicion that the top and bottom of the image have been lopped off at some point to make the film widescreen.

The Australian Blu is in the stores now and comes with plenty of extras BUT INFURIATINGLY NO SUBTITLES. The UK release is said to have hearing impaired subtitles in the amazon spec list and is not by the same media company so it might be a different version. Lets hope so. Being a small market Australia all too often gets the thin end of the wedge with wrong aspect ratios and no subtitles so it pays to do one's research especially as this release is not cheap.

I found some early reviews, 'tho they don't tell much about the technical aspects of the release:
Quote:
Second Sight’s Blu-ray marks the first time the film has been release in high definition in the UK, but the wait was clearly worth it: The transfer is stunning, capturing the soft-focus, sun-bathed visuals in beautiful detail. The audio is fantastic too, with the dialogue crystal clear, all the subtle nuances of Weir’s intended score and the eerie panpipe theme sounding wonderful. Audiophiles have a choice between LPCM Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Master Audio tracks (all English), while there’s a lone English subtitle track.

Quote:
The new blu-ray transfer by Second Sight will leave anyone satisfied. It’s not just that the image and audio have excellent quality. The extra features are also a treat for anyone who wants to know more about this film. Especially rewarding is the making of documentary, “A Dream Within A Dream”, which not only gives a lot of information about the film’s conception and impact, but sheds light on the controversy regarding Peter Weir’s director’s cut. In 1998 Weir, going against the grain, decided to subtract instead of add scenes for a new release. That’s the version in this blu-ray release. As composer Bruce Smeaton says, the original version was the director’s cut; it was the movie he wanted to make at the time. Weir defends himself by arguing that the new version is the work of a director whose instincts and craft have matured in the past 35 years and that he merely removed extraneous moments to make a more powerful experience.
