Default TX-SR605 Onkyo's Surround Sound Processing on a stereo signal sent through HDMI

Hi all

I recently purchased onkyo's tx-sr605 and ps3 and have run into an audio snag i cannot figure out. Granted, I am VERY new to home theater...

I am currently transmitting via bitsream over HDMI, and all is well in regards to DVD and video playback of optical media.

I do however have both audio/video media saved on the PS3 hard drive that only has stereo channels embedded (home videos taken from camcorder, MP3's, etc.) or more often a CD that typically only has 2 audio tracks.

My dilemna lies in the fact that when my PS3 is hooked up to the onkyo, the only surround sounds options are multichannel or direct through HDMI. It seems through HDMI, I can no longer access Onkyo's sound processing to convert my 2 channel audio into 7.1 via Dolby Pro Logic IIx for example.

Why is this?

Even more perplexing is when resetting all my audio connections through optical (sans HDMI audio), I have complete access to these surround sound options in addition to keeping DTS 5.1 etc (but i do believe i'll lose HD surround audio). I dont want to keep switching between optical and HDMI because quite simply it's a hassle, and i firmly believe there's a better solution and perhaps i'm missing something. HDMI was supposed to get rid of this switching back and forth, no?

Where is the flaw in my audio setup that makes it impossible to choose anything but direct or multichannel surround options on my onkyo when utilizing HDMI to process 2 channel/stereo audio?

many thanks in advance!!

I noticed the same thing while I was playing an mp3 from the PS3 with HDMI audio. The receiver outputs it to 2.1 and no way of changing to different sound processing such as surround sound. I might have to switch back and forth in the settings to use optical for music playing.

say it aint so! there has to be a better way...

it's such a pain to be playing a BD, only to realize it's setup for MP3's, exit the movie, and change back to HDMI audio and restart the process (or vice versa, playing a CD only to realize it's setup for HDMI/BD's and change settings back to optical)

I don't have that problem with my setup, as I use Stereo for my mp3s.

1. Check to see if your fronts are set to anything other than "full". Frequencies below a cutoff point will be sent to a sub.

2. Check to see if "double bass" is enabled. Even if your fronts are set to full, this must be disabled to avoid overlapping those lows.

1. Fronts are not set to full. They are set to 150hz
2. "double bass" was always set to disabled

one question however... how would this affect whether or not i can select other surround sound options on the sr605?

Like i said before, for whatever reason the only surround options available to me are multichannel and direct when i scroll through the surround options. "Stereo" sound option isn't even available when hooked up HDMI and only so when i'm hooked up through optical.

Go to manual pages 70-71 to ensure that your config is correct. Then read pages 94-95. I cannot imagine what speakers that you are using to set fronts that high. Finally, why are you using optical if you can pass both bitstream and pcm via the hdmi? I am so confused.
