Default Hybrid HD player from Samsung and Toshiba?

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/06...g_and_toshiba/

http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/06/21...mat_hd_player/

Quote:
Blu-ray or HD-DVD? Just like VHS and Beta there is the question of who will survive and who with wither away unto death? This question is even more uncertain, now that Samsung and Toshiba have joined forces to create a hybrid player.

The player will include both Blu-Ray and HD DVD capabilities. The device is planned for later this year or early 2007. Samsung and Tosh both manufacturer their next-gen optical players at the same plant, a joint venture between the two.
Quote:
Interestingly, it appears that Samsung is calling Sony's bluff - under the licensing agreement for Blu-ray, parters aren't allowed to dabble in HD-DVD. It seems that Samsung is testing whether Sony will really push that.
Quote:
Toshiba so far has been quiet about a possible hybrid or Blu-ray only player; however, if business needs dictate the production of such a drive, there is little doubt that the company will have easy access to the technology and will be able to bring a player/recorder to market within a few months.

If Toshiba made a dual player that played BD as well as the current player plays HD, I'd buy one. Provided, of course, that they offer good firmware updates for it.

Why am I starting to get this feeling, even though I know I shouldn't...that I might have a big fat on my face come 'round Christmas time?

Damn it. I really don't want to get my hopes up.

I seriously hope there isn't a dual player out by Christmas, otherwise I will have to dump my A1 on ebay fast.

If this really goes down, they really should provide some help for the folks that bought seperate players.

Trade in. Incentives. Rebates. Whatever.

Heck, I'm already worried about speculation of a 2nd gen Toshiba player that loads faster, has less bugs, and costs $299. That had better not come to pass by Christmas.

Someone from AVS that I trust just told me this:

Quote:
'Fraid not. Old news regarding the named players being grafted onto the recent Samsung redacted statement, is not journalism, but rather seems to be another shot at fueling speculation from our 'reliable' friends at the TGDaily factory.
I hope someone can sniff this out, one way or the other, for sure...

Honestly, I think we all know someone somewhere will make a dual player eventually. It's just a matter of time. Fingers still crossed for Denon.

I'd actually like one format to just simply die right now. I'm more than a bit fed up with the behavior of the companies on both sides of the fence. Enough is enough. Either one needs to call it quits or all CEs involved should put out dual format players. Enough is enough!

Here is a thread that is an excellent argument for you to keep the A1 if you already bought it:

No thanks, read it yesterday. That's more of a one man love fest with an electronic toy than a convincing argument for the A1 IMO.

It's absurd lunacy of the highest order.

Fanboyism taken to criminal degrees.

Just read my last post alone in that thread for starters, where I completely destroy this nonsense.
