![]() ![]() The Seeker: The Dark is Rising is a 2007 film adaptation of the second book in the five-book children's fantasy series The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper. The film is directed by David Cunningham and stars Ian McShane, Alexander Ludwig, Frances Conroy, Gregory Smith, and Christopher Eccleston. The Seeker is the first film to be produced by Walden Media and 20th Century Fox as part of their Fox-Walden partnership. On his 14th birthday Will Stanton (Alexander Ludwig) finds out that he is the last of a group of warriors – The Light – who have spent their lives fighting against evil – The Dark. Will travels through time to track down the signs that will enable him to confront the evil forces. The Dark is personified by The Rider (Christopher Eccleston). This movie had some cool effects and Ian McShane and Christopher Eccleston, but once I read the book series it really tarnished the movie. Some book based movies can stand assuredly apart from their source in a good way, but The Seeker gets way too many things wrong. This is one of two cases, Eragon being the other, where the book truly does make the movie look bad in comparison. I am including pictures of the books for those interested. The books are steeped in the British Arthurian legends, aka King Arthur the Pendragon. It is quite the well written and entertaining series and it hails from the same period as C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, which I absolutely adore.
[Show spoiler] The above pics are for those interested in seeing what the books look like. As I say, it is an entertaining series and it does get quite creepy in all of the books. I may not believe the legend that Cooper is pulling from, but it does make for a fun nighttime read. |

I've only read Over Sea, Under Stone in the Susan Cooper series, but I heard they botched The Dark is Rising. Hollywood likes remaking, how about this one and get it right the second time around to allow the other books to hit the big screen as well?

I totally agree with you on that. I watched the movie first and kind of enjoyed it, but once I hit the book it went down faster than a poor soul strapped to an anchor and thrown overboard.
