Default State of Play on Blu-ray

I was doing a search for this title and couldn't find one but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this film? I caught this movie on cable and I've been looking for a chance to purchase the Blu-ray. It had been too much to purchase until I received a promotional gift card from Amazon and decided to purchase this film.

While I've never been a fan of Russell Crowe, his style of acting has never appealed to me but this ia a really great movie and I can't wait to watch the Blu-ray when it arrives. For $16, I just ordered the Blu-ray/DVD and Digital Download bonus release.

Anyone have any particular opinions about the film?

It's a decent flick. It's based on a BBC miniseries which is fantastic (starring Jon Simm, David Morrissey, Kelly Macdonald, Bill Nighy and James McAvoy and directed by David Yates who did the last few Harry Potter films).

For me, the movie's biggest flaw is that never in a million years could I believe Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck were old friends. Both are solid in their respective roles, but their friendship, which the whole movie is built upon, just doesn't work. The film was originally supposed to reteam Brad Pitt and Edward Norton - much more fitting for the roles. After they both dropped out, the producers scrambled to hire new leads.

I own the Blu-ray which I got cheap from a closing Blockbuster. Haven't checked it out, but I imagine it looks great since it's a relatively recent movie.

I think this movie is very good too. It's one of my top ten movies about newspapers and reporters....Don't own it on blu yet, and I probably should.

Wow, is there really not a thread for this one already? I had the same thoughts when a thread for La Femme Nikita showed up recently. They're both films that have been out on Blu for some time now but no linked threads when you search for the title. My guess is that there have to be old threads for these films but they were just never linked with the database, likely because of creative thread titles.

Anyways. Yeah, the BD. It's good. As a day and date new release BD, it basically had reference A/V. Never checked in on extras but it's definitely worth picking up.

This movie isn't about Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe being friends but rather their characters. But, Ben Affleck is just a horrible actor ... I simply can't stand him. But, Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams ... they make an excellant team in this film. I actually tried watching the original mini series from the BBC (it's currently available through Comcast OnDemand) and I simply couldn't get into the first episode ... it was just too British for my taste.

I'm not knocking British television as I'm a fan of Dr. Who and Torchwood, not to imagine the original version of Being Human as well as Hex and a few others. I just found the movie more interesting to watch.

I'm just psyched that I got the Blu-ray for free.

Absolutely. People shouldn't be scared off by 'mini-series' either...it's only like six hours total and it's very, very good.

I agree on both counts.

Most of the story's drama and tension centers around the conflicts between the reporter's personal feelings and his professional obligations and all that simply evaporates if you don't believe the reporter actually cares about the guy at the center of the story.

The film definitely wasn't bad (in fact it was quite a bit better than I expected) but it definitely felt flat.

Maybe one of these days I'll check it out ... when i have nothing better to do. On the other hand, while I'm waiting, I'll just entertain myself with the movie version. lols

It's a decent thriller, but just worth a rental IMHO.

I'm with the couple of other people in this thread so far that highly recommend this. It also has a really strong cast (unlike some, I would say even Ben Affleck).

While replay value is a problem with some dramas (once you know the twists), I think this has surprisingly good replay value even after you know them. I'm very happy to own it.

This movie was definitely boring and dull. I regret buying it.
It is not worth a watch or rewatch in my books.
