Default Denon Receiver

I know that this receiver is better than the one I have now. Upgrading to this will be pretty harmless for me. Is this denon worth it?

Thumbs up It's a good unit!

Denon is excellent quality in their internal amps and D/A converters.

I have the AVR-3805 (pre-HDMI) model and it is great except for the lack of HDMI and decoding of the new formats (D-THD and DTS-HDMA).

I don't see how you can go wrong with this one. If you're not set on buying from BB, check eBay. There is at least one good Denon dealer there and the prices are great w/ no sales tax and sometimes free shipping.

I'm planning to upgrade soon, but haven't made up my mind completely yet. I've been looking at the Pioneer Elite and Onkyo and Denon. Denon is the most expensive (for equivalent features and power) but I really trust them because of my experience with my current receiver.

Good luck in your purchase!

I will be buying from Best Buy, I get a discount that nobody can touch. I just made up my mind and will be getting this receiver tonight.

Denon makes a great product but unless I am missing something this receiver does not decode DTS HD MA. So if that is important to you might want to check something else.

It just looks like the Best Buy site needs to be updated with the current specs. Since I know Dennon puts MA after all there stuff that does it.

The AVR-2308CI isn't even on Denon's website... Best Buy's website says it does Dolby HD and the like, but Cnet says it doesn't...

That is a good Amp but you can get better for the money well comparing the prices in England you can the DENON AVR-2808 is £899.95 here you can get the Onkyo TX-SR805 which has 192kHz/24bit Burr Brown DACs (PCM1796) for all channels for £799.00 so you get better sound for less money and for a little bit more you could have the all singing all dancing Onkyo TX-SR875 £999.95 and get the fantastic for up scaling to 1080p HQV Reon chip by Teranex, which is also found in the Denon AVP-A1HD which will cost £4999.95 in the UK next year and Denon AVC-A1HD £3799.95 sorry don't know the US prices

Just go to AVS there is a official thread there that has the specs in it with link to the Dennon sheet. And it has MA.

I just looked at the AVSforum site with the spec sheet. It said Dolby HD through the preouts. It's HDMI or bust.

Sorry About my previous post I thought it was the 2808 not the 2308 it will cost £599.95 in the UK so that’s a good price $849.98 = around £417.126, as for DTS HDMA and Dolby TureHD it does not decode it sorry m8 but the 2808 does

Anyway here are the specs for it

Denon AVR-2308
Available in Black & Silver
Video conversion to HDMI v1.3a and 1080p upscaling
High quality I/P conversion for HDMI
Built-in RDS AM/FM tuner
Dolby Digital and DTS decoding
Dolby Digital EX, Pro Logic II X decoding with Cinema and Music Modes
DTS-ES Matrix & Discrete 6.1 decoding
DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24 Cinema & Music Surround decoding
32 bit SHARC DSP processor
7 equal power amplifier channels, 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms
Personal Memory Plus
Virtual Surround (for use with 2 speakers)
24 bit, 96 kHz DACs with 24 bit, 96 kHz digital interface receiver
Speaker A/B (front) selector
Auto Setup (microphone included)
Audio Delay 0-200ms
Video conversion to component
Subwoofer Pre-out, with Variable Hi/Low Pass Cross-over points(40/60/80/100/120/150/200/250Hz)
Front Panel A/V inputs, including Optical Digital input
7.1 Channel External Input (for Blu-ray und HD-DVD) with wideband (100 kHz) frequency response
Assignable digital inputs
Banana plug compatible speaker terminals all channels
On Screen Display
Pre-programmed remote control features TV, VCR, DVD codes from other manufacturers
Compatible with Denon ASD-1R iPod dock

Personally I would go for the Onkyo TX-SR605 for less money or the 705 at the same money and get the DTS HDMA and Dolby TureHD

I read it as 2808 as well. I would not buy a amp that does not do MA. Since fox is starting to release again and all there titles are MA.

I would also agree that if you have your mind set on Denon then the 2808 would be the one to choose. I currently have it's predecessor, the 2807, and it's a great piece of equipment. The main difference as far as I can see is the ability to decode DTS-HD MA. The 2807 is so nice that I'm having a hard time making a decision to spend the cash on an upgrade.

I would opt for a Onkyo. Onkyo has been getting rave reviews over Sony, Denon and Pioneer in Europe. I have just bought an Onkyo 905 and can tell you it just kills my older Denon receiver. I was planning to buy a Denon 3808 but the Onkyo came out first since my older Denon would not play the higher bit rate audio from Blu-Ray discs. So I bought the Onkyo and never regretted it.

the second factor is that i have a Denon DVD3930CI. the first one i bought died one week after purchasing it. now the second one is freezing up on me unless i reinitialize it after powering on. i see that on the denon posts on avs site is showing an alarming number of people who are having issues with denons made in china. i must admit it an excellent player but it is very unreliable. a friend of mine had his die right after the measly one year warranty expired.

the 3808 postings also show a lot of people with issues with the new receivers. the OSD goes blank or gray and some features do not work. I must admit the onkyo is not perfect either but it is not as problematic as the denons appear to be.

The big problems with the Onkyos is that they have been reported with being hot enough to cook on them, or close to it. And since the op had said they could get a discount I am betting they are a BB emp so Onkyo is out of the question if that is the case. I have the Elite 94 receiver and can say it runs cool and has done everything I have asked it so far. I just need my new Blu player so I can do MA.

I actually got the Denon 2308CI a few weeks ago and it's without a doubt the best receiver I've owned. Despite what the Best Buy says, everybody's comments are correct; it doesn't decode the HD sound but that wasn't a concern for me since 1) my BD player doesn't decode it anyway and I won't be upgrading anytime soon and 2) I don't have the space to enjoy that kind of sound right now regardless. I just needed a good receiver that was capable of decoding the higher bit rate stuff from BDs. So the 2308 was perfect for me. I'll probably upgrade again in a few years but for now, I'm extremely happy with it.

Just as a side note, mine's made in Japan and I've encountered no performance issues whatsoever. Very high quality.

I've had the 4308CI for a few weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it.
The raging whole in my pocket is another story .

Question

I am not sure about this, but if it is indeed true about an update that would inable the PS3 to decode DTS HDMA internally, is there any need for a reciever to decode trueHD and DTS MAHD? Wouldn't any reciever that accepts multichannel pcm via HDMI suffice if one is using the PS3 as their only choice for BluRay? If that were the case, what good reievers are out there that accept multichannel pcm but do not necessarily have TrueHD and HDMA decoders? I would assume they would run much cheaper.
