Looking at the back of your receiver

you don't have HDMI let alone HDMI1.3 which is whats is required to pass the new audio tracks, to your receiver & then be decoded by your receiver. The first BR players to market will have the decoders for uncompressed audio built in them and can pass them over 6 channel analog, You do have 5.1 (6channel) analog inputs . You would be restricted to traditional Dolby Digital & DTS tracks over optical or digital coax with the receiver your currently using. Newer model receivers should have Uncompressed audio decoders in them and then will be able to decode via optical & HDMI1.3

Thanks,
Brian

Even with HDMI 1.3 on your receiver, the receiver will have to be able to receive and decode DD True HD and/or DTS-HD, the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player will have to output DD True HD and/or DTS-HD streams (it appears the Sony BDP-S1 will not), and the particular disc you are playing will have to allow the direct playing of the DD True HD and/or DTS-HD streams (according to Dolby only a limited number of discs will allow this).

However, the Blu-Ray player will convert the DD True HD and DTS-HD streams to high resolution linear PCM which can be passed to the receiver by HDMI. The next generation of receivers should be able to accept this data stream. Really, the only difference is whether the DD True HD/DTS-HD is converted to LPCM in the Blu-Ray player, or in the receiver, so there should not be any perceptible difference in sound quality.

This is really a new way of doing things. I suspect it's going to take a long while for the masses to figure out that you won't have to have DD True HD or DTS-HD on your receiver to get really great sound from your new Blu-ray or HD-DVD players.

Even with our current receivers and just using plain old Dolby Digital 5.1 via a digital connection (optical or coaxial) the sound quality will be better than DVD, as DVD does not use the maximum capabilities of Dolby Digital. On a Blu-Ray player, the PCM or DD True HD tracks are converted to old fashioned Dolby Digital to output to your receiver at DD's maximum capability (minimum compression).

what exaclty does "Stream only" mean?

I see on the BDP-S1 specs it says uncompressed linear 5.1 output, then for everything else it says stream only. Am i correct to assume this would be much in the same way current players Send the audiotracks such as DD & DTS to the receiver via optical/coax and then the receiver decodes it? Also, if there is a Dolby TrueHD or DTSHD audio track on the BR Disc, this will be converted in the player and output through the 6 channel analog and show on the receiver as PCM 5.1?

Now, i go to Samsungs site, & their player shows it decodes Dolby Digital plus and the regular dts,DD but makes no mention of Dolby True HD, DTSHD or PCM.

sorry for the newb type questions, i'm pretty confident in my Video Knowledge, it's audio where i still have some Q's!

Thanks,
Brian

I've also noticed games on xbox360 in regular dolby digital sound much better than xbox,ps2 & regular dvd's dolbydigital.
