Default Box Office Showdown 6/8-6/10: Prometheus vs. Madagascar 3

Looks like Prometheus took Friday, but Madagascar is expected to win the weekend, as family films perform far better on Saturday and Sunday.
Prometheus projections started out earlier today saying $57-$65M, but have now been lowered to $55M. Of course, it's all meaningless until the real numbers come in. Here's the latest:
Quote:
Here are the Top Five based on Friday’s estimated North American grosses:

1. Prometheus (Fox) NEW [3,396 Theaters] R
Friday $21M, Weekend $55M

2. Madagascar 3 (DreamWorks Anim/Paramount) NEW [4,258 Theaters] PG
Friday $19.5M, Weekend $58M

3. Snow White & The Huntsman (Universal) Week 2 [3,777 Theaters] PG13
Friday $8M, Weekend $26M, Cume $101M

4. Men In Black 3 (Columbia/Sony) Week 3 [3,792 Theaters] PG13
Friday $4M, Weekend $14M, Cume $136M

5. The Avengers (Marvel/Disney) Week 6 [3,129 Theaters] PG13
Friday $3.5M, Weekend $13M, Cume $574M

We took the boys to M3, and I fell asleep in the middle of it. My boys did like it though, so that's good.

PROMETHEUS barely edged out MADAGASCAR 3 on Friday--$21.5M to $20.5M. No doubt the weekend will belong to the toons.

Exhibitor Relations now says Prometheus should finish with $52-$55M. That number keeps dropping. That can't be good.

Both Madagascar and Prometheus performed really well. I knew it was going to be Prometheus opening larger on Friday only for Madagascar to take the weekend.

Prometheus is gonna end up being highest-grossing the ALien franchise" . Non adjusted of course. I do expect WOM to be very weak for this and at least a 60% drop next weekend. Still that is a great opening for this. About twice what I thought it would do.

Dont kid yourself. Its more than they publicly predicted, but I' m sure they were looking at $50m+. Studios always guess low publicly so if anything its moree. less than predicted would be viewed as disappointment.

which it will

MIB 3 is looking like more of a disappointment as time goes on. SWATH beats it opening weekend with no 3D or IMAX and R rated Prometheus will match it or exceed it.

at least compared to the previous one it was. MIB2 was dreadful. 3 was a pleasant surprise. Not a great movie, but enjoyable enough.

Prometheus' forecast drops yet again. Estimated at $49.5m now. Madagascar 3 will end with about $60m. Snow White made another $23, and Avengers pulled in just over $11m. All in all, my predictions were fairly close (for once)! I said M3 would do 65, Prometheus 45, Snow White 26, and Avengers 12.

oh no, not at all. I wasn't bragging, so much as expressing shock. I'm usually ok at guessing the order, but my numbers are rarely even close!

Doesn't mean much except for the fact that the estimates were too high, although it is surprising to see it fall off a decent amount from Friday to Saturday.

All of these totals are estimates right now though. For all we know, it could actually have made in the upper-50s when the weekend is over.

Here is the biggest thing... Just imagine what it would have done if it hadn't been playing in less than even 3,400 theaters. I'm not talking The Avengers numbers obviously, but still. Prometheus easily had the highest average of any of the wide releases.

Madagascar 3 might of opened under Madagascar 2 but I think it'll have better legs unless Brave and Ice Age 4 decimate it.

BTW Hunger Games finally broke 400M

Corrected for accuracy...

It gets one more week of box office freedom, then it's over.
