Default Heard HD DVD was Winner - BS

Pal told me that HD DVD increased their capacity to 60 GB and that it now had much better picture quality than Bluray.

Of course I'm sticking with Bluray, but what is everyone's opinion on this? He wants to buy an HD DVD player and I have to save him. So give good reasons.

hd dvd only increased there space to 51GB, the theoretical limit is 60GB, however no disc has every been created. There is a good chance that 51GB discs will not play in current players. Even with a slightly higher capacity, the bitrate has not increased, so still low bit rate vc-1 encodes, while blu-ray gets avc and pcm audio, both look and sound better than dolby truehd, so his PQ argument is way off. Blu-ray has a theoretical limit of 200GB, and discs that can play in current players of 100GB.

Your friend is incorrect. HDDVD still only has 30gigs of space. They do have a disk that in theory can hold 51gigs, but it hasnt been used, and will likely never be used. So as of right now all they really have are 30gig disks.

Also the bandwith for HDDVD is significantly less than Bluray, so even with the extra space they cant have the same PQ/AQ as BD.

I just read this on Wikipedia:

12 cm, double sided 30 GB 60 GB

Maybe he thought 60 GB on one side; when in fact it's 30 GB? He says he still wants to buy an HD DVD player because of 'Transformers'.

Just break it down for him like this...

15 gigs a layer; 2 layers per side, 2 sides of a disc:
2 sides + 2 layers = 60gigs.

Sweet, so you mean that half of this really good picture quality is on one side and the other half is on the opposite side? See that 60gig argument doesn't add up. Unless he just closes one eye for the first time he watches the disc, then leaves the other eye open the second viewing, he will get all the picture, still crappy sound of course.

The only way to enjoy HD DVD is to throw it from a roof top and then go watch blu-ray.

They have the specs for a 51gb disc that likely won't play in any current player if it does get made (if it's even practical to make in a mass market way -- how much modification would production lines need for that?). 51gb discs are science fiction, even Amir should be able to admit that. Not that space is really the biggest problem for HD DVD... the lower bandwidth is more likely the most concerning aspect of HD DVD.

Your pal got his information wrong -- either he didn't understand it or whoever he got the information from was giving it all wrong.

He probably saw a old chart that showed a flippy disc with HD DVD on each side would be 60GB. No studio would ever do it that way since two HD DVD-30 would be cheaper and more reliable.

In the end, it's the movies that matter. Which format has the movies your friend wants to see?

Gary

tell him hes litterly wasting a couple hundred bucks, for my guess is a 1080i picture, for one movie. paramount is in a contract with hd dvd and were paid off, besides universal, every other movie studio supports blu-ray, and all of them but warner do exclusively. oh by the way, your friend won't be enjoying spielberg flicks on hd dvd, he's fed up with their bullsh1t.

The fact is, it is as everyone has said. Toshiba let leak a 51GB disc (where they added 2 GB to the current layers and than added a third 17 GB layer) was in production but later had to correct the statement. They only got approval to make it but are still in the testing ground and have recently found that it can not play on any existing player (yet) even with a firmware upgrade since the laser can not focus on the third layer. So for now it is still only a dream and in testing. Not a real product, not in production.
On the other hand, I believe it was Panasonic (correct me if I'm wrong) said that they have successfully tested and WILL be brining into production in 2008 a Blu-ray disc capable of holding 100 GB and it WILL play in all existing players with a firmware upgrade.
HD-DVD can not hope to meet a 100 GB size, let alone the theoretical 200 GB limit that Blu-ray has.

Besides, no existing film on HD-DVD has 51 GB, and that means if they ever release it, you will have to buy your library over again or live with the lower quality copies. On the other hand, some 60% of BD films use 50 GB, so it already has the quality that HD-DVD hopes to gain some day.

It seems content is the real driving force for your friend. Inform him of all the movies on BD that he won't be able to watch if he buys an HD DVD player. He can always watch Transformers upscaled until it is out on Blu.

Your friend needs to do what all the smart people at this forum have done. Choose the technologically superior(and winning) format and wait 14 more months for Transformers to come out on Bluray!!!

Tell him all the good movies are on blu-ray with the exception of transformers. Tell him blu-ray is winning in sales, both players and movie sales for many months. Tell him there are many options of blu-ray players, and it's not just one company that breaks down alot, Toshiba. And foremost tell him there is no HDDVD that is over 30gb at this time or anywhere near.

It was Hitachi.
