I know some of you will recoil in horror at the very notion of doing this, but for those of you who have hit a wall in terms of collection display/storage space I thought you might be interested in my solution for slimming down my discs.
Cases are unnecessarily bulky and since I store all of my discs in a Can-Am steel disc cabinet I saw no need to keep my Blus and DVDs in cases any longer. I had long been eyeing Discsox or the Atlantic dvd sleeves as a potential option, but the Discsox are prohibitively expensive at almost a $1 per disc, and the Atlantic sleeves apparently force you to fold the covers in such a way that it destroys their potential resale value later. So I set about coming up with a solution that would preserve the disc artwork without creasing it unnaturally, would adequately protect the disc and wouldn't look too janky. This is the solution I came up with: ![]() It's a combination of 4mil Silver Age/Dell size Comic Book bags (which happen to be a perfect fit for DVDs - I'm going to try the smaller modern comic bags for Blus next), some cardstock cut to fit as for added heft and support, double-sided mounting tape and tyvek disc sleeves. The cardstock backer isn't totally necessary but I found that some disc inserts (especially on newer discs) were on thin flimsy paper and weren't sturdy enough. I've calculated the cost to be about $.30 per disc. I bought the bags and tyvek sleeves from Bags Unlimited. Here's some pics of me putting one together: ![]() All the materials I used. ![]() A piece of cardstock cut, scored and folded. ![]() Inserting the cardstock and DVD sleeve. ![]() Folding over the end flap which is secured with regular scotch tape. ![]() ![]() Attaching the disc sleeve with double sided tape. I attach mine horizontally because that's how they are stored in my cabinet, but you could just as easily do it vertically. You can also attach more sleeves on top in a staggered fashion if the movie has multiple/bonus discs or if it is a TV season. ![]() ![]() The fold is made where there is already a crease, so the insert is not damaged and can be returned to a regular DVD case later. ![]() Now about 3 discs can be stored in the space of one in a case. Obviously box sets, digibooks and snap cases present a special problem. I plan to print a custom cover from one of the websites that do those and put the original in storage in those situations. Hopefully this helps someone that is in my situation. |
