Default Blu-ray disc scratch resistence?

Hi, this is my first post, so I thought I'd start with a new thread regarding a question I have regarding the new TDK disc technology in the blu-ray discs. I read on another forum where the HD DVD guys were going on about how because the blu-ray discs have such a thin layers coating, that they are much less scratch resistent than the HD DVD's & regular DVD discs...

Is there any truth to this at all, as some of the guys had buddies that scratched their blu-ray disc once and they couldn't play the PS3 game or movie after that...?

If so, isn't this a big one against Blu-ray? And what are BDA & TDK going to do about it?

From what I know they were initially weaker but now with hardcoat they are much much more resistant.

I dont know any titles that dont have hardcoat

Awesome to hear!!! I'm more sold now than ever. I don't even own anything yet, but from what I've read (other than a misleading troll post on scratches), Blu-ray is definitely the way to go. I go in the Future Shop stores and drool when watching a bit of 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. I plan to buy a Sony Blu-ray player, 12' (16:9) Da-lite "High Power" screen, the Optoma HD80 projector, the new B&W 600 series speakers, and a NAD receiver. Can't wait.

It all depends on how deep the scratch is. It all boils down to is it playable?

Bd's have a hardcoat that dvd's don't have, not sure about hddvd, but it is still not a 100% guarantee that you can do anything to the disc & it will still play.

I have dropped a few bd's on my hardwood flooring & not a scratch.

You can have a scratch & it will play fine but some dirt could get into it & then it will not play.

Can you buffer out scratches, especially if they get dirt in them, or are they too thin coated for buffering?

I think intially hard-coat wasnt mandatory, and thus there were some disks that were very scratch-prone.

However they quickly changed that and now all blu-ray disks have hardcoat. It makes them extremely scratch resistant. Im pretty sure only the very first production runs of disks didnt have hard coat. You wouldnt have to worry about any disks not having it now.

My experience with Blu-ray disc in regard to finger print and scratch has been only positive. I found that these blu-ray discs are much more scratch resistant than any DVDs out there and finger prints can be wiped off quite easily. I love these blu-ray discs.

You should note that Disney/Buena vista movies are buy 2 get 1 right now at Futureshop.

Might as well pick up the 2 pirates movies and get a free one like Apocalypto now while you can.
