I knew that it played them, but I don't own any. I might buy one to see what it sounds like though.

I think you need an HDMI connection to your receiver to be able to play it. Supposedly it sounds awesome. I have an SACD ofr Pink Floyd The Wall, but I don't have the connection to play it.

I own 142 SACDs. The only problem with the format is the lack of titles. Some classic rock and a mish-mash of other stuff have been released but the predominant genre of SACDs is classical music. Check out this site to learn more about SACD. The average SACD is to CD what Blu-ray is to DVD.

http://www.sa-cd.net/home

It's considered the reference point for everything SACD related on the internet.

Some great SACDs have been released that have wide appeal to many people(ala Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, The Police, Rolling Stones...)

And tons of Jazz. Much of the stuff has to be imported but the cool thing is the more recent SACDs are hybrid and have the CD playable tracks so you can still use it in your car or rip them to your iPod (or other) player.

it's written in PS3 shell. It plays SACD. I don't own SACD, but I owned only one DVD-A.
Still, I prefer CD (simple, not complicated). I'm not really into SACD or DVD-A

SACD's are a god's gift to digital music, but unfortunately they never really took off. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon should be considered one of the seven wonders of the world on SACD. It can be heard in all its originally intended quadraphonic-intended glory (much to Alan Parson's chagrin).

Anywhoo, yeah the PS3 plays SACD's which is a nice feature, but listening to them over HDMI, they're output at 176.4kHz LPCM, which is effectively shitting all over the 2.8MHz sampling rate advantage of DSD encoded digital audio.

I own 1 SACD, and that's Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. Sounds awesome, but I rarely feel like just sitting in my living room and listening to music.

Same here, and that is an awesome CD. I wish the 2nd CD was also an SACD though...

But I listen to film scores and I have a couple SACD's and they are very, very nice.

I remember when we had the DVD-Audio vs SACD wars. I bought 1 dvd-audio title for $40 when it first came out. Sounded awesome but decided not to risk buying anymore titles till I was sure. Blu-ray on the other hand i know my ps3 will always play them and can't stop buying them.

You can play them out of the analog outs also. The SACDs Stereo mix will play in Stereo, and the SACD Multichannel mix will play in Stereo too that way.

To the Original Poster: there are a few threads in the forum about PS3 and SACD too.

Just tried to get on this PS3 playing SACDs thing ... and let me tell you its a ****ing headache ... only way it will work multi-channel is if you have a receiver that carries HDMI audio ... good luck with that because good receivers like that get upwards to $1000, optical doesn't carry the SACD signal, so its either HDMI audio or analog, which defeats the purpose ... I just buy DVD-A anything that plays DVD movies can play them

You can get DVD-A discs on amazon.com for around $5 these days ... NIN with teeth is highly recommended, excellent album in 5.1 DTS if your into that music

You know that before digital audio reaches the speakers, it's turned to "analog"?

I've got a Miles Davis SACD. I'd buy more if they worked through optical cable. I don't mind if the sound isn't full bandwidth just really want the surround sound. If it sounds as good as an uncompress blu-ray movie then I'm happy.

i discovered SACD after getting the PS3. i got my Yamaha RX-V661 receiver for under $400 new from an authorized e-tailer, hooked up via HDMI, the SACD discs sound awesome. i have bought about a dozen so far, and especially like the spanish guitar and bossa nova stuff.

The analog outs will play SACD two-channel from the PS3 to your receiver. The analog outs cannot play multi-channel SACD. I don't care, because I prefer my music in two-channel anyway.

SACD sounds really good, however, good luck finding discs locally. You have to mail order most of it. Best Buy does have a small section.

I don't use my PS3 for SACD because I also have a Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD player in my rack that also plays two-channel SACD.

There is an Onkyo receiver at Onecall.com right now on sale for 229.99 that does HDMI audio and will handle SACD from the PS3. I picked up a similar model last year for $399, so prices on receivers that do HDMI audio are coming down quickly.

I've picked up Aerosmith: Toys In The Attic and Johnny Cash: Live At Folsom Prison., and both sound great. You can still find them at Best Buy, mixed in with the regular CDs.
