Default Newbie... What to buy?? Help please!

I have ordered a new JVC DT-V24L1D monitor for my video editing work.
Of course it can also be nicely used for HD playback, and I decided I should get myself a nice Blue Ray disc player. I do want to playback 1080i and 1080p, I also would like something that upscales my current DVD's to the best quality possible.

In an ideal world I would even dream of a machine that accepts a firewire or S-Video in and would be able to upscale that signal to HD But I really don't know if that's possible at all???
And a combi of reader/writer is not availaible yet I guess? Any expectations on that?

What would you guys recommend to me when my budget is maxed at about 1000 euro for a very good player. Is the PS3 a serious player or is that quality not as good as a dedicated Blue Ray player?

Thanks a lot for all your info, I would really appreciate that.
Regards

I have the standalone Sony and I love it, but many on this list rave so much about the PS3, that I would have to say you ought to consider it.

As you can tell by my signature i have a ps3 so i can answer your question the PS3 is not much different then a regular Blu-Ray player except it doesnt play the super sound just Dolby Digital, PCM, Dolby True HD, and DTS no DTS HD Master but it does save money and plus you will end up with a ps3 eventually why not now? the ps3 does have a lot of great extra things like going online for free, folding@home program, upscaling dvds into HD, home which is coming soon, and the list goes on and on. but i am not going to stop you from buying a normal standalone Blu-Ray player

Thanks for such a quick reply.
So my current takaway would indeed be, buy a PS3 instead of a Blue-Ray player. You get a very decent BR player plus a game console on top of that.

Anybody with a completely different POV?
thnx so far

I haven't heard of any Blu-ray device that handles these type of inputs yet. However, I'm on the PS3 badwagon myself and it is a total joy. However, with all of the varying functionality, it does tend to become a large portion of your life... kind of like getting married. It takes up way too much of your time, but treats you much better!

ALSO, although not officially announced, there has bee a few hints from Sony reps that the PS3 will get a firmware updates to be able to output the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio codecs.

Honest opinion, PS3 will make you very happy with your purchase. Just make sure to keep the firmware updated!

well, i have no ideas on the firewire, but you can get a receiver that accepts s-video and will upconvert it to HDMI 1080p.

For instance...Onkyo TX-SR875

Video Upconversion Using HQV Reon-VX Technology: The Onkyo TX-SR875 utilizesHQV Reon-VX technology to convert interlaced video signals to progressive scan signals. The HQV Reon-VX chip provides the ultimate support for standard definition and high definition deinterlacing; 1080p reconstruction of film sources; filtering of jaggies and artifacts; and the reduction of random, "mosquito" and block (codec) noise. HQV Reon-VX also enables color region enhancement and the rendering of more than one billion colors. The Onkyo TX-SR875 will upconvert incoming analog composite video, S-video and component video signals to HDMI so you can connect all your video sources through the receiver and then to your TV via HDMI to give you the best picture quality possible. The receiver can also convert composite video and S-video signal to component if your television does not feature an HDMI input.

I would recommned getting a good hdmi receiver if you do not already have one.

Normally, I would join the PS3 raves, but if the poster has video-editing work, shouldn't the conversation gravitate more toward the best Blu recorder out there?
