Default Possible problem with PS3 or monitor

Ok so I noticed a lot of my blu-ray titles look bad very grainy and fuzzy, not clear at all. I bought the Terminator blu-ray for $14.99 at Best Buy yesterday and compared it to the SE Terminator standard dvd I already had(played on the xbox 360) and let me just say the standard dvd looked better than the blu-ray. I thought I was going insane and even my dad and brother agreed that the Sd dvd looked better so its not just me. I put the sd dvd in my ps3 and it looked a tad bit worse on the ps3 than on the xbox 360. This shouldn't be like that. I also thought Transfomers dvd looked slighly better on my xbox 360 than on my ps3.

my xbox is hooked up via componet cables while my ps3 is hooked up via sony hdmi cable. I've had my ps3 since December and my hdtv since March. POTC2, TMNT and Happy Feet are really the only titles I own that have impressed me and that seem to look crisp and clear.

Is there somethng wrong with my ps3? or HDMI Cable, or TV? I don't think its my HDMI cable or my TV because I use the same one for my dish network receiver and my HD channels look great.

What TV do you have? Is it 1080p? Are you upconverting DVD to 1080p? Are you sending 1080p to your TV?

my tv is Samsung 61' model # HL-S6167W and it is 1080P. I bought it open box from Sam's Club in March.

Both my xbox and ps3 are set to upconvert to 1080p. and My dish network receiver only goes up to 1080i but it still looks great

I suspect the HDMI cable. Does your TV have a way of reporting what resolution it is getting?

When I hooked up my PS3 last weekend, I was really disappointed in the game graphics. So I checked, and my TV was only getting 420p. Checked the settings on the PS3, and could not get it to go higher than 420p. Then I swapped out the HDMI cable with the one that I have been using for my blu-ray player, and bingo! Could set the resolution all the way to 1080p no problem.

Returned the crappy budget cable to Target and ordered another like the one I already have that is known to work.

so I bought some ps3 componet cables(transfering up to 1080i) just to see if the picture quality would look better and it actually does, things seem to be a bit less fussy, grainy. Its not the hdmi wire but it probably has something to do with the hdmi connection slots either on my tv or on my ps3. Any suggesions as to how to go about fixing this?

Hello , you stated you have used 2 sets of cables with the PS3, the good one was working fine on a different player correct? But still the picture on the PS3 with that same cable remained poor? I had this same problem with the PS3 @1080P I bought a new cable that is capable of 5Gb/s transfer rate. I would buy a cable capable of minimal 5GB/s transfer rate and most likely your problem will go away. You must remember that the PS3 is a very powerful machine and pretty much can and will (atleast @1080P) transfer upwards of 5GB/s and when the cables bandwidth cant support the transfer rate the signal gets pretty much bunged up and can most likely cause the poor picture. I know I changed to a 5GB/s cable and my picture quality got noticeably better ( the reds were brighter and crisper and the blacks were less grainy and mosquito noise like) I hope this helps
