Default Should the Blu-ray backers stop supporting DVD?

I'm so fed up with this format war. It's been dragged on for too long now and if both formats are still here in October 2008 then I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing a stalemate.

I think the Blu-ray studios should give customers a bit of a push now. In America now, there are enough shelves for Blu-ray, there are enough players out, the PS3 has dropped in price and there is a decent selection of films out too - people know what the alternative to DVD is (unlike in Europe). By no longer supporting the DVD format Blu-ray players will be the must have gift this Christmas with some decent advertising, and price cuts of some players.

This will also cause studios like Universal and Paramount to lose money too. Seeing as they're making most of their money through DVD's, if the DVD format dies - which it will if 5 major studios where to stop backing it - then Paramount and Universal will definitely be in a sticky situation.

Now I'll also be right in saying that the other movie studios will lose money too, but sometimes you have to sacrifice something to gain something greater. But of course alot more money will be made back through extra Blu-ray sales and Blu-ray consumer electronics companies should definitely make alot more money selling Blu-ray players. The PS3 sales will probably increase too.

This strategy may sound like a risk, but it can be easily pulled off. But with Christmas looming there wouldn't be a better time to do it. Because in the end, Disney, Fox, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM are going to have to stop supporting DVD sometime - why not now?

Thoughts appreciated.

urr, well first of all 95% of their business is DVD, less than 5% is HD media.
Second of all, I haven't bought a DVD since the Matrix 10 DVD boxset back in early 2005... oh, and a copy of Gattaca several months back for a couple of pounds in one of the boxes at Blockbuster.
I'd be surprised if people who have BD players bother getting DVD's anymore anyway... unless it's not on the format and they really want to watch it I guess .

Even if all of those people were to magically stop buying those titles, I doubt it would be more than a pimple on a mosquitos ass to the studios.

Default Short answer: No.

There's no need to boycott DVD---that market is already drying up.

Quote:
2007 could be the first year in which consumer spending on DVDs actually declines.
(emphasis mine; story here)

There's just not a lot left to drive that market apart from new releases, and there's nothing left for the format to accomplish on a technological level. All BD backers need to do is keep backing BD.

Add me to the list of people that since seeing my first blu-ray have no intention of purchasing anything else.
Eventually everything worth having will be on blu-ray.

Calad, why repeat a similar mistake akin to the DVD / HD DVD "combo disc only" solution? It would piss off a LOT of people. Has to be gradual.

Much like VHS, DVD needs to die a slow natural death. Forcing change on people is not considered a good marketing incentive.

I'm now focusing on BD ,its hard for me to back up DVD anymore, especially if you experience BD as it should be.A complete home theater package i owned and since PS3 exist i bought a Bravia x series LCD 40" inch display 1080P capability display.I throw down my widescreen TV 32" in the bedroom.

Especially now i'm experience new technology like PCM and Dolby THD ,even DTS in 1.5 mbs does sound gorgeous.

PQ in BD is all i'm asking for ....

Last time when i visit Virgin Megastore in my Country i saw Spiderman 3 on DVD but i resist myself and asked the employee about the BD version answered me back next week it will be here. What about the trilogy BOX same answer.

I'm just waiting next week to own my first BLU BOX.

DVD for me it is OVER.

I am Blu exclusive and have been coming up on a year. Though I will say that S-DVD is not going anywhere for a long time. Look how long it took VHS to die or go away after DVD came out.

I haven't bought a DVD in a year and a half. Not even for gifts!

My dad is getting Planet Earth BD for Christams.. even though he doesn't yet own a BD player hehe. (If I could afford it I'd get him a player though).

I only buy Blu Ray, and rent DVD's that I want to see that are not on Blu ray. I have sold off most of my DVD collection.

Default TV Series and Specialty Movies

Unfortunately, TV series SDs are the real testy area, for now.

First off, the few TV Series that have come to Blu-ray (Smallville S6, Nip-Tuck S4) are really expensive, even though I bought the first in Blu and will buy the second, eventually, in Blu. (Weeds is certainly the exception, regarding price; but I have no interest in that series. Lost is way too expensive in Blu; but, again, I have no interest in that series, regardless of format.)

Now, the other testy issue are those series which *are not* in Blu-ray and may not come to Blu-ray for years, if ever. Especially, all those series that I've already been buying for some time now (years even) like The Simpsons and Roseanne and Will & Grace and M*A*S*H, et al. Some of these are still ongoing (The Simpsons); others I'm finished buying (Roseanne) or almost finished buying (Will & Grace); or they are TV series from the 60's and 70's that aren't even finished yet (That Girl, Wild Wild West, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart Show, for example). But they aren't available in Blu and may not be for years to come; and, frankly, I don't intend, or want, to go back and buy them in Blu again, or wait for years for them to come to Blu to finish buying each series. (That's not even mentioning current series such as Battlestar Gallactica or Heroes that I collect, which are just now coming to HD but which I have in SD and won't ever buy in HD and there's obviously no reason to expect them to come to Blu any time soon.)

Specialty movies are another problem. I'm gay; and, so far, one of the few Blu films that has *any* gay content is Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. However, there are dozens of gay films (not porn) that are released every year that I'd like to own; but since even Brokeback Mountain isn't on tap to be released to Blu any time soon, I certainly do not expect any of these other gay films to come to Blu any time soon, either.

So, while I won't buy Transformers in SD. Nor the latest Bourne movie. Nor just about anything else from Paramount and Universal in SD or HD, there are those two major exceptions that I listed above that I will still buy in regular DVD, though I wish that they did come out in Blu, along with any other new, or reissued, title. But I ain't holding my breath at this time.

-Greg

i havn't bought a dvd in a loooong time. the only way im buying a dvd is if there is something out there that is not coming to HD media (if its HD DVD I'm boycotting it), so in other words only things like Epic Movie would I consider buying on DVD and those movies tend to suck so i wouldn't have bought them back in 99.

Like I said on another thread, I'm sorta a niche market consumer when it comes to films. I do buy some of the mainstream stuff all on Blu-ray now. But this year I did buy Rembetiko and Doktor Zhivago which were just now released on DVD. When they come out on Blu (20 centuries from now) I will buy them again in Blu.

Generally I've stopped buying DVD with a few exceptions. I'm just awaiting patiently for my favorite titles to come out in new transfers on BLu. Long wait

Everyone needs to clam down. If HD-DVD still has legs after January 08 then we should panic.

We have a huge arsenal of awesome exclusives ready to hit, PS3s sales have never been better, and people are finally realizing what Blu-Ray is.

I'm not worried. Yet
