Default Basketball Diaries April 20

The Basketball Diaries Blu-ray in April
Posted March 5, 2010 09:31 AM by Juan Calonge

Independent distributor Palm Pictures will release The Basketball Diaries on Blu-ray on April 20. This 1995 drama, based on Jim Carroll's autobiography, stars a pre-Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio in a bravura performance as a young poet and high-school basketball promise turned heroin addict. Note that the existing DVD release from 1998 isn't even anamorphically enhanced.

Special features include a Jim Carroll interview and poetry reading, and interviews with the movie's cast and director.

I've never seen it. Pre-Scorsese Leo is kind of odd and funny to watch. I just can't take him seriously. Once Aviator came out, I finally took Leo as a serious actor, (or well after Departed but Aviator was the role that finally solidified him) One could make an argument that Gangs of New York was his first big acting job but I think it was more of a transitional and breakthrough film for him.

I'll give this movie a shot. Sounds good.

Its a really good movie (IMO) Ever since Leo pulled off the role of Arnie in What's Eating Gilbert Grape I have been a fan, while he def is a bit awkward in this movie as well, he plays the role perfectly. Not your feel good movie but def worth watching.

I don't want to come off as an ******* or anything of that sort but I sort of laughed at him in WEGG, it was just odd role for him. "You never go full retard"

I saw it when I was a teen. I like coming age of stories and that was not my cup of tea.

Pretty good film. Will be fun to re-visit this since it's been at least 10 years since I saw it.

This is an auto-biography of Jim Carroll. Sadly, he just died a couple of months ago at the age of 60.

I'm glad to see this Blu-ray news. The Basketball Diaries is an excellent film that is criminally underrated.

This is so weird. I FINALLY decided to DVR this on Showtime. Started watching it last night. And now I was browsing upcoming releases and I see it coming out on Blu! So far I really am liking the film!

Anyone know if this release has the theatrical, uncut version, or the censored one?

I thought there was only one version: the theatrical cut?

How did I not ever hear this? That really sucks, I love his music. R.I.P. Jim.
Don't think I've seen this film in 15 years or so, except for a couple minutes on cable the other day. The HD version there left lots to be desired, hopefully the BD will do it better.

The last time I went to a drive-in Gilbert Grape was on the bill. Have not seen the Basketball Diaries in many years but I do remember it being a very good film.

Oh please. You are acting like Scorsese is the reason Leo is a good actor. You are big noting the director and giving him undue credit, majorly. Leonardo has always been a solid actor and it shows here, in Basketball Diaries, years before Scorsese came into the picture, so eat that up.
