Default HD VMD...a losing battle?

Here is an article from hidefdigest in regards to the annoucement of a new hidef format HD VMD. Talk about a waste. The consumer is already confused about the differences of Blu-ray and HD-DVD, what makes anyone think we need another format? Talk about a waste of time and resources if you ask me...

No one will support it...

# The player has a red laser like DVD players...

# The disc capacity = about 40 GB

# No High - resolution Audio tracks... only Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus or DTS

# first releases in : Australia, France, Island, India, Poland und Skandinavia

# IFA:
they showed some movies on HDVMD ( 16 Blocks", "Apocalypto", "Passion of Christ", "Lord of War" and "Lucky Number Slevin" )

# HDMI output / YUV

This can´t be the Future... Go Blu!!!!

while HD VMD has some great benefits (low production cost, cheap players), they have entered the market far too late to possibly make much of a dent. I realize it's still pretty early on in the HD market, but HD-DVD and Blu-ray have far too much backing from major corporations for a small newcomer to be able to survive.

Looks like an even CHEAPER version of HD-DVD. I don't want to hear that "same quality" BS. With compression comes compromise in picture quality. They hope to get it up to 30gb. Blu-ray is already 25.

Geeze, I hold my faith in knowing that the studios have already decided to go blu-ray. Thank GOD for Disney.

20G per layer, but the article states it is a multi-layer disk.

Let's see: it could win because of inexpensive players and inexpensive media cost, despite not having as much studio support as its competitors. Hmmmm... where HAVE I heard that before?

exactly. In a way HD VMD is actually good news for Blu-ray fans because it will only serve to take away from the HD-DVD crowd as both are trying to attract people by using low price tactics.

If anything it'll totally undercut HD DVDs international market

But in all honesty, I believe it's simply a non-starter. In any market poor enough that BR will not be viable soon

1- People can't afford HDTVs
2- Bootleggers abound, and they only boot the best

Noone, I believe all the films are from local distributors and not a big 7 company

Edit: Yup

Quote:
The company's press release includes no mention of any US-based content partners, and it seems highly unlikely that any of the major studios will make their films available on VMD disc -- at least in the short term. (Overseas, the company has partnered with a number indie film distributors, most notably including Eastern Europe's Monolith Films which owns regional rights to films like 'Apocalypto,' 'Lord of War,' and '16 Blocks.')

ROFLMAO!!!!

WOW!!! They must be REALLY stupid! hey whatever it takes to put a fire up BDA's asses to lower manufacturing prices....this HD VMD business reminds of the Ross Perot - Independent Party, where the elect would waste everyone's time, divert their attention, waste votes and voter's donation funds even though he/she knows they dont stand a chance of becoming president (no offense).

They wanna come into the game trailing 2-3 yrs behind BD and HDDVD and expect anyone to give them a listening ear. How are you gonna sell a player if you dont have movies to show for it. Look I am all about the little guys here, but they should have entered this market a very long time ago, I have been supoprting HD and HD formats in general for over a year and I have yet to hear about VMD's until now...

Dont waste your time with this ridiculous news, we got another war to fight with a real opponent! Thanks

We spoke to HD VMD at IFA just 2 days ago. Like WickyWoo said, they get their movies from local distributers and they are pretty much EU focused (but they are also releasing in Australia, Iceland and India). They were only displaying about 20 titles or so and it's not exactly blockbuster titles, so I think they have a major problem with content.

The maximum capacity is 40GB/disc (5GB per layer = 8 layers), however (don't quote me on this), but I'm fairly sure they are currently only using 3 layer discs = 15GB and 1080i. They have 2 players, only difference is that one will feature a USB port + some SD/etc card readers. The cheaper player will sell for 179 Euro. It's not really a competitor to Blu-ray, it's more of a competitor to HD-DVD, as they both try to be "the cheapest solution". However, I think they will have problems competing with HD-DVD, but they might have a very slim chance in some Eastern European countries and maybe India as well, especially if they could cut some kind of Bollywood deal.

The problem with this kind of business, is that if the only thing you can compete with is the price, you are constantly cutting your own margins until there's nothing left.

yeah this seems like much more of a threat to hd dvd than to blu-ray. this could really be a deciding factor in this war i think.

The specs described for this format are very much like what I hear when uninformed people are describing HD-DUD. Many people think that HD-DUD uses red laser technology and is just basically a "Super DVD", while Blu-ray uses blue lasers.

Perhaps some poor suckers will buy into this format thinking that they are actually buying HD-DUD.

I think that this is a win-win for the Blu-ray camp and will help bury HD-DUD.

This format will be soon forgotten. HD DVD is right behind it.
