There is much to do over Sony's "supbpar" BR launch titles. Speculation over why it's SL mpeg2 and when DL mpeg2 fixed bit or VC-1/mpeg4 will be brought on tap.
I see alot of similar things between the soft launch of BR and that of the first and second Playstation game consoles. Remeber the crap launch titles for those two systems? hardley a reason to run out and buy the systems...right? as big of a sony fan as I am, i waited nearly a year before diving into ps2, as I saw Dreamcast as superior still. Well, it didn't take long for Sony to start cranking out titles and boy did they ever deliver. This IMO will be very similar. Sure these titles where rushed to launch. They got caught with their pants down with Toshiba Launching HDDVD and needed a quick answer so they threw some stuff out there as a distraction. I think we'll see the real potential of Blu Ray come october, Sony isn't holding back their player & movies for no reason. what do you guys think? |

I still see the DC as being superior to the PS2. It is a shame Sega jumped ship so early, it could have been one hell of a system.

It comes from the fact that if compared back to back with a great system at a lower price the great system would destroy the bose for transient response midrange clarity deep bass etc.

I still think "Soul Calibur" for Dreamcast blows any and all fighting games....on XBox......out of the water! (let alone the PS2) Jodi |

*cough* Virtua Fighter 5 on PS3 for the win.
![]() What this reminds me off is the early days of DVD. I've been playing some on the early DVDs I got for one of the first DVD players on my DB-P1000, and it's all pretty messed up. I had one MPEG1 encoded disk, no kidding. Double sided movies, get half way through the movie, have to stop and turn the disk over like an LP. Widescreen movies that have black bars top and bottom because nobody has a widescreen TV, movies with no menus at all, just the movie on the disk, 4:3 pan and scan versions of widescreen movies. It's the early days of DVD all over again, kinda fun to be part of it... "I remember when Blu Rays were SL/MPEG2..." |

I agree, we are really seeing that "bleeding edge" early software now, and its just as hit-and-miss as early DVD software, but people forget that so quickly.
I remember how excited I was to buy the first "RDSL" (Reverse-Spiral Dual Layer) disc of Terminator 2 when it came out, that was the first time a movie was able to use the whole whopping 9gb without having to flip the disc over. It was very exciting to see the hitch of the layer change ![]() Then the whole rollout of DTS, and the big drama of why Spielberg wouldn't let his movies be released without DTS. Good fun. If anything these discs (BD) seem to be maturing more quickly than the first DVDs. |

What was the MPEG1 disc? I never even realized MPEG1 was part of the DVD specification! That's a great collector's item.
