Default Maestro (Bradley Cooper)

Quote:
Netflix has acquired all rights to the untitled Leonard Bernstein film that Bradley Cooper will direct, star in and produce from the script he co-wrote with Oscar-winning Spotlight scribe Josh Singer. The project exits Paramount, which set the film as a priority project in May 2018. Amblin remains firmly part of the drama that spans over 30 years in telling the beautifully complex story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre.

The Bernstein film is expected to begin production early next year. Netflix will give it a significant theatrical release before the film premieres on its streaming site, just as it did for Scorsese on The Irishman, as well as Marriage Story, The Two Popes and several other awards season contenders.

[Show spoiler]

"Hollywood is abuzz about the super-secret table read Steven Spielberg held on Wednesday for an undisclosed project with some of the town’s top talent.

It is unknown who participated at this time, as everyone involved was required to sign a non-disclosure agreement. And they’re remaining mum lest they lose a chance to work with the legendary filmmaker. However, Variety has learned the project is an untitled biopic of conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Coincidentally, Bernstein wrote the music for West Side Story, which Spielberg is also considering taking on as a follow-up after Indiana Jones 5.

It is also unknown who wrote this specific Bernstein script, though sources say it is not the same one that Josh Singer (Spotlight) currently has set up at Paramount.

Insiders say that no matter how well the table read went, Indiana Jones 5 will be Spielberg’s next film. His follow-up to the next Indy is still undecided. This table read was viewed as a third option, as the director is also weighing the West Side Story remake."

Already sounds better than another Indiana Jones movie.

Yeah, I'd watch this movie for sure. ESPECIALLY w/ Spielberg doing it.

I'm definitely more in favor of this than a remake of West Side Story. I hope Spielberg ditches the latter. Also wonder if Williams would be scoring this or they'd just use Bernstein's compositions, cuz Williams doing his take on some of Bernstein's stuff could be really cool.

I don't think Spielberg is motivated by the prospect of huge grosses when it comes to his historical dramas and biopics - at least not anymore. His expensive kiddie blockbusters are made with the widest audience reach in mind, of course, but he's experienced and savvy enough to know that mature stuff like this and The Post and BoS aren't gonna break any records because they appeal to adults only. The phenomenal success of Lincoln was clearly an outlier (much like Schindler's List was - what other Holocaust movie got anywhere near a 320 million dollar gross worldwide?)

What's that now in 2018 BO money? I never really know how they translate/convert that into what that would be today.

Lincoln, Pentagon Papers and the Holocaust...three things most adults know about. How many people even know who Bernstein is? I stand by my $12 post.

The inflation-adjusted domestic gross is 211 million ( ).

There aren't adjusted estimates for worldwide grosses.

So I guess This Is What I Do will never get made. Or at least by him. With all these projects and his age.

That and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara seem to be on hold indefinitely.

That's ELMER Bernstein, no relation to Leonard.

If Spielberg casts Mark Rylance again, I'm going to puke. He keeps using that guy, and I am just not all that impressed.

I think he's extremely charismatic and very likeable. I thank Spielberg for casting him in parts that matter, cause I never noticed the man before.
