Unhappy Onkyo 606 HDMI issues

Hey guys for awhile now I have getting so many "No Signal" readings on my display from the 606. Everytime I turn on my PS3 bang I can't get a signal for long periods of time. I have to unplug the hdmi cable from both ps3 and AV that works sometimes or I have to switch constantly from one input to another and even have to shut AV off and on just to get my signal back.

Now I tried multiple hdmi cables one from monoprice and monster's expensive stuff. I tried hooking up my ps3 directly to my television and bang works with no problem. Do you think it may be a bad hdmi board or something? If so this sux because I haven't even owned the 606 a year yet. I got it from Circuit City while back.

I really dread calling Onkyo because of all the horror stories I've read on here about their customer service. I am currently saving for a new AV because I like the others I've seen with THX etc... like the 807 but in no way can afford to get it now

It sounds like it could be the receiver. At least you have a two year warranty on it. I was going to suggest cables, but you already tried that.

You know what, try using component cables from your source to the receiver and then to the TV. If that works with no problems, then you know it's the HDMI inputs not working properly.

Playing Red Faction on my PS3 running thru my 606 as the visuals on screen increased the receiver switched off to safe mode. Took to store tried it at store repeated the shut down. The techy believes that the video processor in the 606 can't handle the what is being thrown at it by the PS3 and runs home to mama. Sent unit off to repairer to see what the fault is, keep you posted. by the way the PS3 is now dead as well, can't be picked up to the system in the B/room.
I returned it to my supplier who in turn sent it to their repairer and found that the HDMI port had failed, they sent it to ONKYO for confirmation and they replaced the HDMI board, the unit was barley 12mths old.

I'm having the exact same issue with my PS3 and Onkyo 606. What I've found though is that what you are attempting to use the PS3 for makes a difference. Trying to start a BD or DVD or just turning on the PS3 and leaving it on the XMB will result in the 606 not picking up the HDMI signal. However, turning on the 606 and then turning on the PS3 by popping certain PS3 games in will result in the 606 detecting the HDMI signal. I say certain games because some work and some don't. After one of the good games has been in for about 30-40 minutes, I can then exit the game and the 606 will run flawlessly until I turn it off. Like you, I have tried different cables without different results and running HDMI from the PS3 to the TV works fine; the problem is definitely with the receiver.

Ever since about 1 or 2 firmware changes on the PS3 back, I've been seeing this to some degree on my Onkyo 805. I think they changed something. I just switch to a different input and then switch back and it's fine from there on out. It's intermittent but definitely started up about a month ago.

I don't think it's an Onkyo issue so much as the PS3. Try the switching inputs bit and see if that "solves" it. If so, I don't see this as a hardware issue personally.

I always turn 606 on first nowadays because if ps3 powers up first forget it lol. when I turn on my ps3 I just usually hang out on the xmb for while and play some tunes if the signal picks up. your right once it gets going it's ok but yesterday it took a crap on me after having good signal for 2hrs

ya I usually switch inputs alot but lately no luck. I hope it wasn't something sony did with firmware. for the short time I had a stand alone BD player I never experienced this but it may be I just never used it as much as my ps3

PS thnx alot guys for the related issues and suggestions

Hrm, yeah. That sounds different from what I'm experiencing. Time to call up Onkyo and get referred to a local repair shop.

Now that has never happened to me. Is it a harbinger of what's in store for my 606?

I hope you are able to get yours sorted out soon.

How do you reset the receiver?

Edit: Never mind, I found it in the manual.

Vagrant_1, I discovered something today that might help you. Go to the PS3's Display Settings and uncheck 1080p (leaving 480p, 720p, and 1080i checked). Doing this drastically improved the ability of my 606 to pick up the PS3's video signal over HDMI.

Angry same problem

I am having the same problem with my Onkyo 606. The main problem is with my xbox 360 and my Sony S550 Blu-ray player. It used to work perfectly, but now on a regular basis I can get a signal. I have to keep turning the receiver on an off until it gets the signal. It seems like the receiver is seaching for the signal but cant. I called Crutchfield for support but they said this was not a known issue. Has anyone found a solution for this yet?

if you are saying you called Crutchfield (we'll gather that's the place you bought it from) are you within the return period or not? cause if you are you should be sending it back for either a new on or a refund.

I'm getting ready to take mine to my local repair facility because I have been having this same problem for months now, but, it was livable. Now, it's not, because it's getting worse. I use to only have a problem going form cbl/sat to game/tv, I had to keep switching back and forth to get a picture, now, it's doing the same thing when I cut it on to watch my sat, I have to cut the receiver off/on 5 times to get it to register a signal. Apparently the mother board needs to be replaced form my research.

My local repair facility is best buy, hopefully, it will not be to long w/out her.
