Default HDMI output from the Onkyo 606

Hi all...
First off, I'll apologize if my issue has been discussed previously... I did search - found nothing relevant...

I bought a 606 unit from eBay - and it came in yesterday... Went through all the pain in switching out the old receiver - and then this...

Connected the HDMI out to the TV - turned the unit on - using the power switch on the receiver - and there was no OSD from the receiver. I know that the TV and the HDMI cables work - but, just in case I tested another TV and another HDMI cable... to no avail.

Here's the funny thing - when the HDMI cable is connected to the TV and the receiver is on, I get a message of "No signal". As soon as I turn the receiver off, the message changes to "Check signal cable". Which means that the HDMI is somehow active - and the TV can detect it.

Am I missing something? Has somebody dealt with this issue before?

Any insights?

Rup

It could be that the person you bought the receiver from was outputting with component video cables or something other than HDMI. You may need to scroll through the receiver's menu on its own little display (a pain, I know) in order to change it to output over HDMI. It could also be that IF your TV is 1080i, and the receiver is putting out in 1080p, that your TV wouldn't be able to display anything. In either case look through the manual so you know exactly where to go in the menu to change the things I suggested above. Good luck.

Please forgive me for this but:

Do you have a dvd player or cable box plugged into the 606? If you JUST have the receiver plugged into the tv, there is no signal to display on the tv...

sounds like the cab/sat output is set for COMPONENT CABLES

i believe its option 1 in the menu (im not home now.....im trying to think about my 806)

then it should have something for INPUT and choose the correct input/output
ex cab/sat = hdmi 1
dvd = hdmi 2

I thought the receiver itself could generate an OSD... so another component would not be necessary. In any case, I had the PS3 plugged into HDMI4...

But, an interesting thought, nonetheless...

Good point. What I didn't mention in the original posting is that I did the factory default restore - just in case somebody did what you suggested. I'll try scrolling down the little, useless menu on the receiver itself to see if the output is still set to component. As far as the HDMI output goes, I have it set to "resolution pass through", which is 1080i from my PS3...

Only if it's been told to in the menus. I would maybe look into doing a factory reset on the puppy and start from scratch. Might save a lot of headaches. *edit* Just saw you did that. Hrm- well, you still need to tell the OSD to output via HDMI. I remember when I first hooked mine up I was using a separate cable till I got it swapped over.

Has anybody here encountered issues with the 606 having a faulty "HDMI" board?

I went through almost the entire 606 thread before I bought mine, and I don't think I saw anything like that.

sorry man, bought mine and the OSD came up right away.
side note...
does anyone know if he plugs in the audessy calibrator mic, if he can exit from that directly to the menu? it just came to me, and i would test it but my calibrator is at my aunts house in michigan, so that wont be coming back to me for quite a while.

Thanks to all for all the advice...

I think I just bought the only one lemon that ONKYO has ever made

Wish that would work with a lottery ticket... may be I'll just buy one on my way home...

That's a bummer. I hope you're able to return/exchange it.

Default Fixed!

I did have a faulty HDMI board on the Onkyo TX-SR606. I was fortunate to have bought this unit through an eBay vendor who conscientiously worked with me - and shipped me a functioning HDMI board. I replaced the board... and voila... !

Now I know the sound(s) I was missing!!!

Given all the C**p that Onkyo spouted about the unit not being covered by warranty because I bought it on eBay (despite the fact it was manufactured in November '08), I am sure glad that there are still good traders out there...

Congrats! I can't imagine how I would have handled that situation, but it looks like you got the assistance you needed and you're ready to go now. Enjoy!

It's nice to know there are a few places still around who put a value on providing good customer service. I'm glad you were able to get the issue resolved. Enjoy your new setup.

Hi,
I am certainly glad that you were able to resolve your problem successfully! Sounds like you really found a trustworthy vendor.
My questions: how did you find the correct part so quickly? How DO you replace a defective HDMI board anyway? If this had happend to me, I would probably still be crying in my beer trying to find a service agent. Kudos to all of you!

I just a while ago read a post from someone looking for advice on a broken HDMI port on an Onkyo 805. I suspect that as time goes on, we will see thi s problem more often because of the flimsy nature of the HDMI terminal itself.

Answer 1: A little troubleshooting can go a long way towards diagnosing probable cause(s) for equipment malfunction. In my case, everything was working per parameters - save visual output from the HDMI inputs. Since visual output on this unit is usually "pass through" - it led to the conclusion that the HDMI board was likely malfunctioning.

Answer 2: I don't know where the vendor found another HDMI board this qucik. I suspect that the board may have been "salvaged"...

Answer 3: Changing boards isn't that difficult... a few screws and a couple of connectors... However, the one caveat is that you cannot be afraid of electronics...

Answer 4: Broken ports, which are - in a way - integral to a board, would be difficult (if not downright impossible) to replace. It would be far easier to replace the board than just one port.

My $0.02.

Hi Rup,

I've just sent you a PM asking a couple of questions, I hope you don't mind.

If anyone else has any information on how to obtain the replacement part or instructions on how to replace it I would be extremely grateful. My Onkyo 606 has recently developed the same HDMI switching issue (just out of warranty wouldn't you know it) and I'd quite like to repair it myself rather than pay £120 to have it fixed by an authorised repair centre and be without it for a week or more.

Any information would be gratefully received!

Best Wishes

Mark

Default what the heck!

I don't know how yours will be but I have an HT-S6100 system with a HT-R667 receiver that only came with this system, similar to the 606. Right now I am schedualing it's second trip to the "authorized" service center for issues with the HDMI switcher and board. In addition it now wont display the on screen menu even though it is supposed to do it automatically when hdmi out is in use. Nothing but problems. I don't beleive all onkyo receivers are bad but in my experience they're not worth the hassle. The authorized service center said they have all makes and models of receivers in the shop for same or similar issues. The first time I took the unit in for this problem I spoke with the tech who fixed( or not fixed! ) it and said that he had 30+ onkyo's in the back with the same problem!!! Granted it's still under its 2 yr warr. but if it's fixed and the fix only lasted 9-10 mo, what am I gonna do when it's out of warr.?
