Default My question on prices.

$600 bucks is no big deal. A one time cost for a video game system that will likely be amazing.

What I am a little concerned about is the price of the games. Will the blue-ray discs be pricier than the games on DVD-rom? If it mimics the xbox 360 games and come out at $60, that's doable. One it gets into $70+ I'm going to be annoyed. Or will the price even out due to the money saved by developers by the ease of making games on better technology?

Well, so far there are no definites on prices in the USA. In Europe, the PS3 game prices have been set at prices that would roughly compare to about $70-$80 U.S.

But get this, even if the games stay $60, according to Ken Kutaragi, president of video gaming at Sony, the PS3 isn't a console--it's a computer. He said that he imagines that as advancements go on in the PC world, the PS3 will respond with upgrades. And if there's something that becomes very mainstream in the PC world, the PS3 will be FORCED to adopt it, otherwise it won't be able to play games that come out after that adoption date. Don't believe me? Go read the latest issue of PSM (it's got Resistance: Fall of Man on the cover). They talk about it in there.

So, $600 plus games that may be over $60 a pop plus mandatory upgrades...the PS3 sure looks like a real bargain, huh?

^ Once again, YOUR SPECULATION based off anti sony sentiment with no factual backing. just your assumption.

Read my post again. All of those "speculations" came directly from Ken Kutaragi, PRESIDENT OF VIDEO GAMING AT SONY. HE was talking about $100 games. HE was talking about mandatory upgrades. LEARN TO READ.

I'm not saying $100 games or mandatory upgrades are a 100% certainty. But when the president of all video gaming for Sony talks about it seriously, I take it as a strong possibility. And since we don't yet know the exact U.S. pricing for games, this is all we have to go on right now.

You Quote it as certainty...it's only speculation on his and your parts. Nothing certain.

Go find the latest issue of PSM magazine. He said that if there is a development that becomes mainstream in the PC World, the PS3 will HAVE to adopt it. And really, if it's coming from the president of all video gaming at Sony, I think you of all people would pay attention to it.

If, is the key word here.

And since when is future proofing a bad thing?

seems like only HDDVD fanboi's don't get this.

Um, future proofing would by definition mean there would be no mandatory updates, because it would already be included. That's what future proofing means.

And maybe you're more of a PC gamer, but console gamers buy consoles specifically so they don't ever have to upgrade it, but still play every game that comes out for it. The idea of a console with mandatory upgrades is entirely opposite to the idea of console gaming.

I doubt there will ever be an essential upgrade for PS3. Sony may release some extras for it down the line, but I believe this is one of those occassional situations where Kuturagi is getting carried away, or is being misquoted. He's an excitable chap when it comes to PlayStation.

I fully expect a launch day PS3 to play every game and movie released during its lifetime. Also, I have fully accepted the reality that the PlayStation 3 is no longer just a games console. It is an entertainment device, one I hope to fully exploit when I get one. You need to understand that and move away from the "simple console" point of view.

On the matter of price; for what you get, the PS3 is a bargain. If you don't agree suprmallet, don't buy one. Game prices - a website in the UK has them at £49.99, the same as 360 games.

As an aside - I honestly have to wonder at the mental state of forum posters who spend their time endlessly criticising something, I see it on every forum I've visited and I simply despair at these people.

I have no desire to buy an Xbox360, but I don't spend my time boring others about it on forums, trying to make them feel or look stupid because they bought one. That would be absurdly arrogant. Who the hell am I to tell someone I've never met what they should spend their money on?

Suprmallet - do you think you are doing us a favour with your (clearly anti sony) posts? We are all intelligent enough to do our own homework about the PS3 and decide if it is right for us. My decision to buy one is based on facts, not on anything I've ever read on a forum. That would be ridiculous!

Official PS3 game pricing has not yet been announced. Until then what you read or hear is speculation. Those higher prices may prove to be correct but there's nothing to back them up yet. Remember the PS3 was originally going to have 2 HDMI outputs, in reality that's not true. Same thing can happen here.

Every console since the original NES has had an expansion slot, though nobody but sega & NEC have ever done anything with it. Expansion slots have been able to in years past provide longevity with a console without compromising backward compatibility. I would guess that IF there was an expansion peice, all other games would still work and games that required the hardware update would be marked as such much in the same way sega 32x, arcade card for the turboduo etc.

Expansion slots can give new life into a console and make it so that a whole new system doesn't have to be released in order to stay competitive and meet the needs of gamers in the future. I remember eagerly anticipating the m2 upgrade for the 3dO, it was suppossed to be the truth, surpass psOne in every way...unfortunately poor marketing lead to a never successful panasonic 3dO.

^So See, I am a console gamer...
Matte of fact, i've never even bought a PC game (even though my PC is way powerful enough to run any game perfectly out now)

Someone asked a question, I answered it. If everyone were intelligent enough to do all their own homework, we wouldn't have too many posts around here or at any forum because there would be very little to discuss.
