Thumbs up Star 80 - Eric Roberts' tour de force

Anybody remember this movie? Based on the true story of Dorothy Stratten (PMOY 1979), played beautifully by Mariel Hemmingway, it tells the sad tale of her rise and fall in Hollywood. Eric Roberts' performance as the painfully insecure boyfriend is one of the spookiest and most powerful I have ever seen. Stayed with me loooong after the film was over.

Any idea if/when it's coming to Blu??

I remember Eric Roberts in a movie called The Pope of Greenwich Village, also starring Mickey Rourke in the leading role. Eric Roberts:"Charlie, they've cut my thumb!"

Warner Archives released this on DVD, but not on blu-ray. Can somebody explain to me what they were thinking?

The film was controversial when released, it has only now started to be lauded for its magnificent storytelling, editing and its daring tone. It remains an insanely good film.

Star 80 is a great & disturbing film - but the regular DVD out there is very sub-par. I've seen this at least once, and the PQ is awful. I would definitely be onboard for an HD remaster.

For what it's worth, I didn't even realize Eric Roberts was the brother of Julia Roberts until about ten years ago; he's acted quite a bit over the years - and has starred in some great roles (Runaway Train, S80, etc.) but he's definitely underrated.

Eric Roberts was brilliant in this. Why he wasn't Oscar-nominated (or won) is beyond me. One of the best performances of the '80s. And, yes, it's up there with De Niro in Raging Bull.

The film has a big cult following. It's screaming for a Blu Ray release. Criterion would be an appropriate label to release it I would think.

Wouldn't it be ironic if they remade this film with actor Paul Schneider as Paul? He would fit the role pretty well I think and it would be interesting to see.
