Default Need Help on a question

Where can I find a chart that shows % of movie releases for say 2007 by studio.

Preferably, a chart that isn't made by the BDA.

here's why, I'm in a discussion and here's his point:

Quote:
Both formats hanging around for long would not be good for Sony and its PS3. They can't tout it as a high-def movie player...because it doesn't play a LOT of movies (3 of the biggest movie studios are Warner, Universal, and Paramount - and Universal and Paramount are HD-DVD exclusive), and it doesn't have a lot of games (what? I thought it was supposed to be a game console lol...)

The Chinese might have a role to play as well...if they can make cheaper and cheaper machines, might sway the average joe. And they're close to breaking the anti-piracy mechanisms...so all hell will break loose when that happens.

So if you're just trying to play around and wait out the war...HD-DVD is MUCH cheaper to get into. Either way you'll miss out on a lot of hi-def movies, but the 98 buck HD-DVD player mentioned above is also a great DVD up-converter so you can play the DVD versions of Blu Ray exclusives. 100 bucks will get you the player, and rent the movies. At most you lose 100 bucks.

need some help disputing this.

I would just talk about the releases coming to blu-ray in the next few month, and the lack there of for HD-DVD

That's IF you can find that crappy player for $100. I'm guessing it's going to be sold out, and quickly.

After that, I think the next cheapest HD DVD player is what... $300?

I think A LOT OF PEOPLE are having the misconception that HD DVD players are going to be on sale for $100 indefinitely... which is totally NOT the case.

And what's going to happen after the fire sale? People who are wanting HD DVD are going to sit around and WAIT for the next $100 deal to happen.

Toshiba selling below cost and giving away 7 HD DVDs? I'm sure their stockholders are pleased.

I've talked about that, but I would like to counterract his comment about studio support, which I don't believe, but I don't have something unbiased to show

well there will be the 169 A3 blackfriday...and I am pretty sure you will generally be able to get the A3 for sub 200 dollar prices in the next while. And circuit city and amazon havn't sold out of the A2 which is at 200 bucks

Don't know if this is EXACTLY what you were looking for, but here is a webpage for all 2007 movies and you can sort by different criteria (with a little manipulation you should be able to get what you're looking for):

Go to this link: http://www.blu-raystats.com/index.php?OrderBy=Boxoffice which lists all the blu-ray movies, and filter it by year 2007. (This will show only movies released from January 1st, 2007 to present)

At the bottom there are a bunch of charts and stuff showing information.

Good luck man.

First you can tell him that actually, since 2002, Sony Columbia, Buena Vista and Warner are the top dogs. Fox is a bit behind, but they are preparing their come back for '09.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/studio/...yr=2007&p=.htm

Paramount might end up on top this year (as a freak accident), but we all know why (dreamworks, Spielberg and Bay .. and we know where their heart is at ).
You might want to tell him about the stance of New Line too (new releases exclu on BR)

Look at '06 and down to 2002 on the charts.

Also, tell your guy to have a look at the projected '09 releases.
If it's too complicated for him, look up the following on Imdb.com.

Metal Gear Solid - The Movie
Spiderman 4
Resident Evil - Animated (CG)

and the nuclear bombs:

Avatar
Alita Battle Angel

Plus the possible (funny) little one: Halo (Fox), w/ Peter Jackson involved.

Before that: Wall-E (by the maker of Nemo), The new James Bond, a new Alien vs Predator that this time looks pretty awesome and plenty of others

Trust me, Toshiba has nightmares about '09 (also the end of their exclu with Paramount) and hopes to come to a quick victory in '08 (like that's going to happen).

He states Warner but we got Warner to. They may not have Warner much longer.
The Chinese can make Blu Ray Players also.

Go to the MARKET ANALYSIS section. Select DISTRIBUTORS. It will give you the top movie studios from 1995 to 2007 averaged together or seperately (year by year). Universal is #5 and Paramount is #6.

That should handle your situation nicely!

Thanks to Saiyan!!

this is the chart since 1995:

Here's a good chart that shows the top grossing distributors since 1995:

First number is total movies, then total gross, then avg gross, then market share
Note the top 4 are either blu-ray exclusive or neutral i.e. both.

2 Warner Bros. 381 $15,899,552,019 $41,731,108 13.29%
3 Sony Pictures 406 $15,158,457,804 $37,336,103 12.67%
4 20th Century Fox 283 $13,903,608,378 $49,129,358 11.62%
5 Universal 274 $12,671,812,378 $46,247,490 10.59%
6 Paramount Pictures 266 $11,881,671,730 $44,667,939 9.93%
7 New Line 194 $7,202,041,110 $37,123,923 6.02%

Here's his latest:

Quote:
The thing that keeps me from bluray is, it's incomplete. The players you buy for $400 and up today can't do what that $98 player does. A lot don't have ethernet, none have the secondary video decoder that enables PIP type commentary, some don't have Dolby TrueHD decoding, etc. The A2 has all that, and while it's true that the $98 sale is done, it will still be only $200, and supposedly the next model, the A3, will be $168 on Black Friday. Just everybody buy the hardware that makes the most sense, and the studios will eventually have to release on that format.

he does have the point of internet activity and PiP....and there isn't much we can do against that. But, you can mention how HDDVD is a dead format, there will be no more evolving. WIth profile 1.1 PiP and other interactivity featuers are met by bluray. Perhaps even more when profile 1.2 comes out (who knows what this is) and internet capacities with profile 2.0

The point is that while bluray playesr currently arn't great for this, at least they are 1080p and the format is constantly evolving. Ask him if he would ever want to burn a video on his computer and play it in is player. Burners for bluray are coming down in price quickly, NOT so for HDDVD

HD-DVD writers don't exist do they?

I still think it's a big talking point for blu-ray that is seldom mentioned; The storage capabilities for Blu-ray in the IT field and home storage. Especially if the 200gb disc plays out.
