United Kingdom The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) StudioCanal

Release date: March 23

Quote:
An adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's opera by the Archers (aka Pressburger and Powell), after their huge success of 'The Red Shoes'. The ballet follows Hoffman's tales of his love for the doll Olympia, the courtesan Giuletta and the frail diva Antonia, and of how his quest for the eternal woman was always thwarted by evil.

Not my favourite from Powell and Pressburger, but I loved the dance sequence with Moira Shearer.

I have instantly pre-ordered this release from the UK. Gorgeous Technicolor photography, glorious music by Offenbach, stunning staging by The Archers (Powell/Pressburger) -- AND Moira Sherer as well. Can't wait.

Hold onto the Criterion DVD for the commentary track. It is one of the best. I can't wait for this on BLU though. It is my favorite P&P film.

You know, ashamed to admit, but I've not listened to the commentary. I rarely do for most titles, but will have to give it a spin on your recommendation. I do hope SC put together a nice package for this though.

It is a decent track lots of background info. Maybe not a huge amount these days with imdb etc but I bet for the old laserdisc it was insane to hear back then. I do think it holds up well.

This is going to be an instant purchase for me. I attended the premiere of the restoration at the London Film Festival, and it was truly spectacular - I'm going to see it at the BFI again at the weekend, and I can't wait!

It's got a really beautiful cover, too:

Just got a shipping notice from Amazon. Can't wait to see this again. I haven't watched it since my Criterion laserdisc and DVD.

Mine arrived yesterday from Amazon and I can't begin to tell you how great this blu-ray looks. Very high bitrate, beautiful transfer, absolutely stunning.

It's going to be out soon in France, so I'm more curious about the editorial differences between the releases than the restoration itself : could you tell us what are the extras and their durations ?

But the best would be to know : does the UK disc looks like it's UK-locked, or are there other languages / menus available ?

It appears to be Region B locked, can anyone confirm this?
