Default El Cid on BD?

If Weinstein decides to go neutral or blu, a great way to start would be with a HD version of its remastered edition of El Cid, currently scheduled for SD release on 1/29. I'd love to see this great classic in high def.

Movietyme.com has it in their upcoming releases and it appears it is region free. but you need to be a customer i.e. login with an account to see the details, and I dont know if its blu or hd....

Weinstien has to go blu, i dont see why they would sit around and not release any titles or even release on hd-dud. They could start off by giving us a blu version of the holloween remake.

I'd love for this to come out, but I keep reading, at least about the European versions, that the transfer is not that good. I have that "Miriam" collection DVD from some years back and if that's the print they used for the Blu-ray, they need to go back and do a frame by frame restoration. I don't think they did that.

Is this title being announced soon? I noticed it was under the preorders section.

There's a placeholder for a US BD, but no indication of a release date.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/El-Cid-Blu-ray/103261/

Weinstein released the Miriam Collection DVD in Jan. 2008, and doesn't seem to be in any hurry to release it on BD, probably because it needs restoration. I had the Miriam DVD, it is good for DVD. I got rid of it when I got the German BD. Should have held on to it - the German isn't much better than the DVD in a good upconverting player, and the Miriam DVD seems to have go out of print, Amazon has it for $40, third party seller fulfilled by Amazon. And the German BD is region B locked (not a problem for me).

May I assume that the foreign BD of FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is likewise not much better than the Miriam DVD?

From what I've seen in screenshots of European Blu-rays, it's not an impressive transfer, given the film. There is an improvement, but disspointing so, from what I have seen. i think they need to do a frame by frame restoration using the best elements possible, but I doubt this will happen. The movie is classic, big sweeping old school Hollywood. For me, it's right behind Ben Hur and the Ten Commandments in grandur.

I have to disagree. I have the 2009 German Koch Media versions of both films on BD and in particular F.O.T.R.E looks jaw droppingly stunning.

Well, hopefully at some point this will get released here in the States. I know there is a Japanese/region A and a Brazilian/region A out there, but I'm not sure about their respective PQ

I have enjoyed my UK BD. Good extra features too. PQ was a disappointment for many (yes it could look a lot better with a fresher scan or restoration), but still it projected well at 100 inches and outperformed anything the DVD could do.

Worth considering, however you need region free and PAL playback for the extra features.

I noticed this site and Amazon.uk show the UK version is Region B. Even though this site shows the French versions as Region B, Amazon and Amazon.fr show the French versions as Region FREE?

Can anybody tell me if the French versions are any good and if they are indeed Region FREE.....

Be careful with the Euro copies, I believe the commentary is out of sync on the German edition.

How did Weinstein end up with El Cid? It was distributed in the U.S. by Allied Artists which folded, and their post-1947 library sold to Warner.

Update: After a little research, I found that the Weinstein Bros., founders of Miramax, got the rights to El Cid and in 1993 Miramax Films and director Martin Scorsese released a restored version. In 2007 they released it on DVD under the the Miriam Collection label.

The latest Japanese release is very good though the sound is still problematic. It plays well on US Blu Ray players and does not suffer from the 24fps stutter that the previous version does.

Can anyone confirm that Harvey Weinstein still owns the rights to El Cid for U.S. home video releases? It certainly appears to be the case.
