Default Do any MGM Blu-rays look good?

I just finished watching Black Rain on Blu-ray. The PQ was amazing for the movies age and the movie itself was pretty good for what it was. I dont know what it is but movies like Black Rain make me feel nostalgic for a decade I never really experienced (I was born in 1986), kind of a wierd emotion for me to get I suppose.

I am the kind of person who loves old movies more than new ones and the bottom line is I have seen some very good Blu-ray transfers and some really bad ones. The Warriors, for example, is the best PQ I have ever seen for a 28 year old movie, with Untouchables and Black Rain being close seconds. Paramount really knew what they were doing when transfering old movies onto Blu, kinda makes me miss them more (their audio was a whole different story though).

I really want to get Robocop on Blu-ray but I am worried MGM didnt do a good job on it, the reviews arent to good (then agian the Black Rain reviews werent to good either but I got it as part of the summerBlu-ray offer) and every MGM Blu-ray I have rented so far has either looked terrible (The Terminator) or barely passing for "High Definition" (Rocky). I have seen a few MGM titles and none of them have ever looked good.

Can anyone here who has seen Robocop please compare it to the other old movies I mentioned? Is robocop as good as Warriors, Untouchables, Black Rain or closer to the likes of Rocky and Terminator? Or can anyone name a good looking MGM BLu-ray.

Also if anyone else can recommend some good old movies with amazing PQ, I'm always open to suggestions?

WOW I feel like I could have stated this thread!!

You are spot on. MGM titles have been a big disapointment.

Fox Titles=Great Stuff
MGM=Junk

Robocop was just not consistant. I do know its an old movie, but as you mentioned earlier, plenty of old movies that look fine like Warriors,Anchor Bay dead movies, etc.

No excuse for MGM to have these crappy BD discs with no extras, and charge an arm for it.

This may be off topic, but I'll bet 2001 beats WARRIORS PQ and it was made in 68'...I haven't seen The Warriors on BD so I can't say for sure, but 2001 looks amazing.

Ya I heard that to, I will have to compare the two one day. Unfortuntley I was never a 2001 fan and will be waiting for my local Blockbuster to get it.

Just to give you an idea of how good Warriors looks though, many of the scenes look as if they were just shot today.

I like older movies as well and thought black rain transfer was great. I also own robocop.. the origional dvd was very bad... the blu ray was much better but isn't going to win any awards... bottom line if you like old movies and you liked total recall you will like robocop.

as for reqs. i assume you have already seen terminator, leathal weapon 1-2. (leathal weapon 1 had a lot of dirt in it). trading places and coming to america.

some of the really old movies look great too.. haloween was great. best was 2001.

I totally disagree with your opinion on The Terminator....it may not have been reference quality, but it was a hell of a lot better than "terrible".

The last two MGM titles I have purchased - Robocop and Edward Scissorhands - have been great. Robocop needs some TLC but it still looks good. Scissorhands looks great to me.

Well, I wouldn't want your life to be put in any danger, but yours is by far a minority opinion - so I guess a lot of people are living dangerously

Mr. Brooks looks incredible imo. Pristine PQ. I'm hoping this release is a sign of things to come from MGM.

On Mr Brooks, did they finally clean up their MGM intro logo? All the other studios have nice HD logos at the beginning of the disc, that MGM logo is just ugly VHS quality.

Every single movie on there you listed was a low budget sleeper hit. Rocky was made for virtually nothing in a lot of practical locations with minimal lighting and cheap and cruddy 80s film stock. Terminator same deal. Robocop too, though it cost double what Terminator did.

All of these titles look far better than they ever have before on Blu-ray, and I don't think even Lowry can do a lot to improve them because the "defects" are inherent to the original photography

Same MGM logo as always. The Fox logo before the movie was slightly cleaned up and swoshed blu-ray beneath it.
