Why does it seem that LCD's only go to 52" and then it is DLP? arent Plasmas able to go higher than 52"? I am new to this stuff. But it seems all the one's around 60" (which is what I am looking for) have the bigger rear end. is therwe anything around 60" that is thin?

its because of the prices, Plasma's are generally cheaper than LCD's so its not that they cant make a huge LCD tv but the cost of the thing would be astronomical. You can generally pick up a good 50inch Plasma for the price of a good 42 inch LCD. I guess LCD's cost more to manufacture.

So I am not looking to buy for about 15 months, so I have plenty of time, I am just trying to gather more info and do my research early. Are plasmas generally just as good as lcd's? Or is it preferred to have a plasma in a darker room? and will they ever release larger lcd's? And re the Dlp tv's a dying thing?

LCD's generally have a sharper image and the colors tend to be more vivid but that can be a bad thing as alot of the times the richness of the colors overpower the image and if not calibrated properly can give the image a sort of "fake" look, its hard to discribe but once you notice it, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Plasmas on the otherhand tend to give the viewer more realistic colors and tones. A good 1080p plasma calibrated correctly can give the viewer the impression that he/she is actually looking out of a window. A good blu ray movie that gives this impression is Apocalypto. As you can proberly tell I tend to prefer Plasma's but its really a case of each to his own as both LCD's and Plasma's are excellent technologies. You gotta do some research, take your time and check out a few tv's and come to your own conclusion. Good Luck!!!

these are all available somewhere...
Sharp makes a 65" LCD Panasonic makes a 65" Plasma Pioneer makes a 60" Plasma LG makes a 71" Plasma These are all 1080P i believe and all no more than a few inches thick. I picked up the Panny for $6750 in my city, and I have seen the Sharp but it was $10000 here. |

One issue with plasmas is the shiny glass. The orientation of my living room is such that I'll get the reflection from my whole kitchen into the screen if I got a plasma, that's why I never even considered the plasmas even though I love deep blacks. Thankfully the new Sony XBR4's have exceptional blacks. ![]() enjoy gandalf ![]() |

Another issue with plasma is motion dithering, which is a result of the method used to display the image. There's also the risk of burnin, which can be a problem if you like to have the set on 24/7, or watch a lot of 4:3 unstretched.
PS. I think one of the manufacturers (don't remember which) have demoed a 102" LCD screen, so it's definitely possible to make larger sets. It's just a question of time. |

I owned a Sumsung 42" DLP, and it crapped out after just 18 months... light engine went bad and way too expensive to get fixed. After months of research I ended up going with Panasonic plasma. It is hands down better in every way, better color, deeper blacks, viewing angles. The only drawback is glare for some, but it worked perfect in my living room (one little side window). LCD's still tend to have motion blur, but don't have glare. Go look at the panasonics, and see if the glare will be an issue, if not, def go panasonic. Oh also they dont have burn in anymore... its called image retention, if you watch a widescreen movie for 2 hours lets say.. then change , you may notice the 2 lines on the screen for about a minute, then it goes away.
