Default Another Earth - opens July 2011 in select cities

I just found the below website and trailer while browsing around, and after watching the trailer I definitely want to check this one out.

http://www.foxsearchlight.com/anotherearth/

SYNOPSIS - In another Earth, Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a bright young woman accpeted into MIT's astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child.

On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.

I saw the trailer for this a couple months ago, and it looks awesome! It won't come to a theater near me, but I will be sure to check it out on video.

It definitely looks more interesting than some of the big-budget stuff that has been released recently (I'm talking about you, Transformers 3).

Been interested in this one since the trailer came out. However from what I know, the other earth is just a backdrop and it more focused on the characters' lives on Earth 1.

Specifically, it's a backdrop for the angsty character to wonder whether she could relocate and live in the alternate world where her father was still alive, and what changes/choices would she make in her life because of it, etc...

Hey: It's a Sundance indie, and you know what planet they come from....Did you expect a freakin' PLOT???

I've seen it numerous times. My vote for the best film of the '10s so far. As for a recommendation...you can check out Sound of My Voice. Brit Marling stars and also wrote it just like Another Earth. Has a little sci-fi element to it. What were your questions about the end?

ill put my question in spoilers since people coming in might not have seen the movie before....

I actually had 2 questions but can only think of 1 right now...

[Show spoiler]ok, so they said that once the 2 earth were seen that basically the lives on each planet could have stopped living simultaneously. Which is why she gave him the ticket to go to Earth 2 to be with his wife and child, right? so, thinking a bit deeper, this would theoretically mean he would kill himself on earth 2 to be with family?

also, Rhoda sees herself at the very end. my question has no answer and is up for interpretation but since she sees herself, wouldnt that mean that Earth 2 was still living a mirrored life of earth 1? its actually very confusing and i tihnk im looking into it too much lol...but the only way she got the ticket to go to earth2 was becuase she was a felon and wrote that letter...so if the Rhoda on Earth 2 got chosen becuase she was a felon, wouldnt that mean that Johns wife and child on earth 2 are also dead?

Sorry if that is confusing but the whole idea kind of makes my head spin which is what i loved about the movie.

[Show spoiler]concerning your first question, yes he could kill the other version of himself and get back with his family.

As far as the second goes it is open to interpretation so I will give you mine and maybe that will be a sufficient answer. When the other Earth became visible, the mirror stopped. Each planet then became its own individual entity. Therefore, at that moment it is possible that the car crash never took place thereby deviating completely from the other Earth or the crash could have happened and stayed along the same path. Could go even further and say that the crash could still have happened but what took place afterwards could still have been different. How Earth 2 Rhoda comes to our Earth is sort of irrelevant. Since the story was really about what would you say to yourself if you were in the position to talk to another version of yourself. The shock of the ending wasn't necessarily her seeing her Earth 2 counterpart, it was more having to face herself. What does she say? Does the Earth 2 version have the life she wants? Will that version despise her because of what happened? Etc. Etc. To me, it was all about being able to look at yourself in the mirror and own up to, accept, and try to make things right if you have done something you are not proud of or something that has hurt someone else.
Does that make sense?

I Just want to say that that is a great interpretation. Reading it brought back the rush of emotions I felt watching it in theaters. I still have a problem getting behind the tragic event that puts the wheels in motion. It felt kind of contrived to me back then.

Just face it...you are a Brit Marling hater. In all seriousness though, what would you have preferred to happen instead of that tragic event? Is it just the event itself?

[Show spoiler]yea that makes sense. and i understand the movie wasnt about the details of Rhoda 1 vs Rhoda 2 and what exactly happens on earth 2. i was more or less theorizing and going deeper becuase the movie left me thinking quite a bit, which i love when movies can do that.

either way, great movie!

the other movie you recommended looks like a scary/thriller huh.... ill check it out

Just hate turn of events that require you to sympathize with the protagonist off the bat. It just felt like an "insert drama here" type of moment, not unlike the end of End of Watch.

Again, that's what sets the wheels in motion, so there isn't much I can suggest otherwise. Though, if we would have been given five or ten minutes with the victims before the crash, I would have liked that alot more. It would have messed with my sympathies alot more.

For the record, I think she is an outstanding actress, but I just dislike her films with Zal Batmanglig. This one had some of the same issues that those films suffer from, but they are not as numerous.

Not unlike the final scene in End of Watch? Nothing is like that horrendous scene.

I understand what you mean about having some extra time in the beginning but I disagree. I like that they jumped right into and showed a mistake that really anyone could make. Especially at a young age.
