Default TDK announced 200GB prototype.

http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news.php?newsId=4550

Quote:
31 August 2006 - At IFA 2006 in Berlin, TDK has announced both the release of its 50GB recordable Blu-ray media and the development of a prototype 200GB Blue-laser disc.

TDK claims to have developed technology able to store 200GB of data on discs by using blue lasers.

That translates into about 18 hours of high definition video.

Little more info somewhere else:

"TDK’s research and development into new technologies is bringing new possibilities to next generation optical media specifications and performance. The company’s advanced material technology was influential in playing a key role in enabling the creation of the 200GB Blue-Laser Disc development. The company’s 100GB prototype disc uses four layers of 25GB to reach 100GB capacity. For the most recent 200GB technology development, TDK has stretched the physical margins of the Blu-ray Disc format to hold up to 33,3GB per layer while staying within the tolerances of the BD playback specifications."

It looks they can only max out to only use 25 GB per layer meaning that if they utilize 6 layers, the max would be at 150 GB.

I think they would need to amend or make changes to the spec in order to allow for 33.3 GB per layer.

What are the odds that discs with this kind of capacity will actually be available at a reasonable price for consumer use?

Default TDK boosts Blu-ray Disc capacity to 200GB

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.ph...city_to_200gb/
Quote:
TDK says it’s achieved a capacity of 200GB that will double the capacity of the company’s current 100GB Blu-ray prototype. One of TDK’s new 200GB blue laser discs could store approximately 18 hours of high definition video (encoded at 24Mbps). TDK is a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association , to which Apple also belongs.

The initial Blu-ray Disc standard allows for 25GB single layer Blu-ray Discs and 50GB dual layer Blu-ray Discs. However, a recent signal processing innovation stretches the physical limits of optical media, realizing 33.3GB capacity for each of the disc’s six layers. As with the 100GB disc, and other Blu-ray Disc media, TDK’s 200GB blue laser disc is single-sided.

The company’s 100GB prototype disc uses four 25GB layers to reach 100GB capacity. For the 200GB technology development, TDK has stretched the physical margins of the Blu-ray Disc format, enabling a disc to store up to 33.3GB per layer while staying within the tolerances of the BD playback specifications, according to Bruce Youmans, vice president of product research & development.

Blu-ray (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of leading consumer electronics and PC companies (including Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over two hours of HDTV or more than 13 hours of standard-definition TV. There are also dual-layer versions of the discs that can hold 50GB.

Probably when 45 GB HD DVDs become a reality. Circa 2008-2009.

Nah. TL HD DVD is a lot closer than 200GB Blu-Ray. NEC lists HD DVD 45GB support on their drive product page.

TDK has been flogging 100 or 200GB discs for a while now. I'd like to see some concrete deliverables. The Press Release overload of some BDA companies just irks me.

Any links or references?

When can we expect BD50's with pre-recorded material from major studios? In about the same time frame, give or take?

I'm thinking TDK could probably ship some 200GB discs in early 2008. I think we need another generation of laser optics before they can do this affordably. This is simply my WAG

I welcome it. I'm not sure i'd want it for movie applications but for data storage needs it could become quite handy in some circumstances.

Umm, if I'm not mistaken Fox just announced titles on BD50s for this year--2006. So no, not the same time frame.

That's just the thing, does anyone have any credible links regarding either 45 GB HD DVD discs or 100 or 200 GB Blu-ray discs? No, not really. What I gave was a guestimate. I wouldn't expect 45 GB triple layered HD DVDs at the very earliest, late 2007 / early 2008. By then I'd imagine the BDA will have 100 GB disc ready to counter any HD DVD increase.

At the very least there are many links to working prototypes for 100 GB Blu-ray discs and now 200 GB Blu-ray discs. I have not yet seen any articles regarding working prototypes for 45 GB HD DVD discs. But if someone has one...by all means...

I think your spot on marzetta in terms of woroking prototypes vs not and about release dates for various formats.

90GB dual side TL45GB support.

I'm pretty sure TL45GB will eventually become a legit product. I'm not sure if it'll be used for movies.

Yeah with the bandwidth limitations on HD DVD i'd be surprised if it was used for movies to be honest.

Triple layer is not part of the movie format.

On the computer side, I don't think any of the double side formats will be ever be used (be it the 90Gig hddvd or the 400Gig bluray), everyone hates them, just as double side DVDs went extinct after only a few of the early movies.

I admit I'd love to backup my entire computer on a single 400Gig dics, but since you have to take it out of the drive to flip it, I'd rather have 2 x 200Gig that a disc that's hard to manipulate and cannot have a full size silk screen.

Triple Layer doesn't increase the bandwidth or decrease the bandwidth. It is more a factor of the disc density. Now if they had came out with a DL 45GB disc then the bandwidth from the disc would in fact be higher.

ethan I agree. Optical media is always lagging behind tape and now that hard disc drives are cheaper we're seeing more backup to disc.
