Default Had a Best Buy employment interview today...

Okay, so I have had a job interview at best buy today. went very well. I was interviewing for the magnolia home theater sales position. the one manager doing the interview asked me who I thought was going to win the blu-ray vs. hd dvd war. It surprised me because it was the fourth question of the interview. I said blu-ray because of the support from more CE's and studios. I was going to mention that disney has been pushing BD more than even sony but he beat me to the punch and said that disney will win it because it's so huge and carries so much weight to customers. It was like he was preaching to me. I really liked this guy. he was telling me that no way would he recommend a technology like hd dvd to someone if that player is only being made by ONE company. so this manager is knows what he is talking about and isn't clueless. everything I was going to say about why I thought Blu-ray would win he touched upon. One more thing, I mentioned the cheap toshiba A-2's they were selling and he said it didn't matter. he said customers would rather have the confidence of knowing more companies are on board a more pricey item than one company behind a cheap one. I hope all best buy managers are like this one. Now I just hope I get the position.

This really happened? While I support blu, i also manage a lot of people and handle interviews myself... sounds like someone who is not very professional.

But good to hear he is blu focused...

Good luck with getting the job too... sounds like you found his angle.

I think if you dressed the part, and let your knowledge show...you should be ok.

how did you draw that conclusion from what he said?

Just curious, as I am in management at Best Buy.

Just surprised he would preach a format during an interview...What if the response was HD and this guy was against it? Would that effect his hiring decision?

That is pretty much what I was getting at. Maybe it was the way I read Mels post...

since I was interviewing for the home theater area he wanted to know what my opinion is on the high def war. I'm glad that he has common sense. reality is, blu has everything he mentioned. why would he push something to a customer that is a big ? heading into the future. blu-ray is here to stay, as a media format, not just a movie format. at first I was going to act all "I will push whatever the customer is interested in stuff" but realized as did he that customers want stability. blu has it. it's not like we weren't talking facts, the facts are blu has more studio support and almost every CE is making standalone players. It's nice to know that best buy has managers out there that know everything we preach about on here. the facts.

he didn't push anything. he asked my opinion and went on to agree and made some of his points. It's not like if I liked hd dvd he would of ended the interview. the guy showed alot of class. It shows that they are well informed on this little war which is very good. I just want the job. I love selling home theater stuff.

i'm sure if he had a logical explaination for prefering HDDVD the hiring coordinator would have enjoyed listening to him, then shut him down with facts (that BD is more profitable than HDDVD) and explain the benefits to offering BD. By that time it probably would have been too late.

One question I always ask in an interview is,

"Have you ever purchased one of our performance service plans?"

If the answer is no, I ask if it was offered, and if they say yes...I ask why the refused to purchase it. Depending on the answer i receive, I make a decision on their employment with us.

See, I can't have someone trying to sell something for me that doesn't believe in the product. The same theory might have been employed by the individual conducting this interview.

Since Blu-ray players are heavy in Margin and HDDVD players generally are not, this may be a strategy he is using running his business at that location.

My BB has a BD player on almost every endcap. In Hometheater.. 2 samsungs, 1 sony, 1 LG, and a sharp BD encap! and then there is the ps3 endcap. To the one HDDVD endcap.

Sounds to me like you put more wait into your service plan, which makes your compnay alot of money. Than what the CE make. Not that I have not taken them at times but for the most part they are a waste of money.
