Thumbs up Television Episodes That Actually Scared You

Seeing as how Halloween is fast approaching here in the USA, I thought this would be a fun topic. I was curious what television episodes actually scared you when you were younger. I've seen my share of nightmarish images on the good old tv, but the one that I remember the most was season 1 of "Space:1999" and an episode called "Dragon's Domain", which so traumatized me when I was a kid that I was afraid to open my closet, look under the bed, or go near the basement for weeks. I made the mistake of watching the episode by myself and was not prepared for the menacing Lovecraft like creature or the gruesome death scenes. I think the practical special effects as well as the sound effects from the episode still hold up today.

Many X-Files episodes (Home in particular is just... icky), nearly the entirety of Millenium is creepy as hell, The last 6 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the first episode of American Horror Story and the last episodes of Hannibal S1.

with you there, I was a kid when X-Files was on tv, and I remember the tv being left on and I'd see it and I'd be scared to death.

there was also an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? where it was something about a humanoid rat, that's all I remember, but I was legitimately terrified at the time.

The only TV show that ever scared me was "Unsolved Mysteries", the original one with Robert Stack. That theme music alone was enough to give me the creeps, but the worst offender was the episodes about ghosts. Those never failed to give me nightmares.

I also forgot about Ghostwatch but that one feels more like a movie. And it's utterly terrifying.

I just remembered the Grave Danger episodes from CSI. That was some seriously suspenseful stuff right there.

The Punky Brewster Halloween episode came to mind, so I looked it up and apparently it scarred a lot of childhoods.

When I was a kid it was "The Vampire" and "The Ripper" episodes of the original Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The suspense in the Vampires lair was especially frightening for me as a kid.

Nothing on fictional TV has ever been as truly horrifying as the episode where we, the audience (as opposed to the characters in the show, who has to wait another couple of episodes), discover who actually killed Laura Palmer on TWIN PEAKS. It's been over 20 years later and I still can't fathom how that passed muster with the censors, but I'm so very glad it did. Incredibly chilling.

That X-files episode...is that the one with the inbred cannibals? If so, that episode gave my wife nightmares for a couple of days after.

Yep, that's the one. It's also the only X-Files episode to be rated TV-MA (Consider this: Hannibal is TV-14 and the show's as gory as many hard R rated or NC-17 horror films) so you can imagine how shocking it was.

Default Blink

Doctor Who episode 186 - "Blink"

Won numerous awards, including two Baftas, a Hugo, and a Constellation Award for Carey Mulligan.

Was voted the second best episode of Doctor Who behind The Caves of Androzani(1984).

It introduces a now regular villain on Doctor Who, the Weeping Angels. The Angels episodes are some of the best of the Who revival, and Blink is the first and best of them.
