Default Did BD+ work?

We are closing in on a month with having a BD+ protected title out in the wild now, which is as long as most HD DVD'ers said it would take to crack. So has there been any word on if BD+ is still secure? From the lack of news through the usual channels I would suspect that it is.

Also have all of the player issues been worked out with firmware updates?

Has anyone found out for sure that FF2 and DAT were BD+'d?

Either way, BD+ is merely a system. You can write completely new protection systems every time they break one, unlike AACS that's just key revoking

Thus far it is uncracked, and the word from Slysoft is that those titles are "unrippable," at least for now. Though they (and others) are certainly trying, nobody seems to be getting anywhere close. And if you actually start to look into how BD+ works there are countermeasures that studios can use even if the initial protection is cracked for a given title. And since the protection changes from one title to another, I doubt that the hackers will be able to permanently "crack" the system.

As for updates, Samsung's updates have been out for a couple of weeks. Nothing from LG yet though.

No it has only been 42 weeks this year so far. Give it time, it will be 52.

I believe Fox was quoted as saying they weren't sure if the problems on certain players was from BD-J or BD+ so that pretty much confirmed that BD+ was being used.

Thanks for the responses, so it looks like BD+ is so far a success. That should give plenty of reason for content providers to release on BD vs. HD.

If BD+ can stop them for 6 months, even a year before they crack the first line of defense, be happy. I'm sure that they have at least 3-4 BD+ schemes ready to go

The playback problems from what i've read have been vastly exagerrated, only Samscum & LG units have actually been unable to play the discs!

According to the HDUD fanbots ALL discs won't play! they are getting annoyed BD+ still hasnt been cracked hahah

I lean toward thinking it will get broken, but if these first discs aren't broken by the end of the year, then I think that would put a fair amount of pressure on Universal and Warner to swing Blu-ray's way. NBC/Universal is asking the government for more help in fighting piracy and I think the government should be looking at whether NBC/Universal is trying to help themselves, or trying to kill products that look like they give better copy protection and then complaining. And I'm not talking about just BD+ here, since Blu-ray has the BD ROM-Mark and requires AACS on the ROM discs to try to fight professional piracy, once the content is compromised.

It is a lock-out code, if the code is hacked, it can be change easley & the hackers have to start all over. I would not be surprised if Fox mixed the bd's up so there is a diffrent codes in a lot, making every 3rd or 5th bd have a diffent code too screw with the hackers. That is what I would do.

None of those are quite right

BD+ is a virtual machine that contains a third level of encryption required to play the disc. The watermark, AACS and BD+. While being the final step of decryption, BD+ also watches for attempts at hacking and seizing the keys and shuts things down if it sees it.

The only way to stop BD+ is to disable java, which causes the disc not to function at all. While I'm sure someone will eventually discover how to pull the code out of the runtime, they can just change the program used and they have to start all over

Of all the recent Fox releases I have only seen 'Edward Scissorhands' as a BD Rip in the wild. This must mean that Fox is not using BD+ on all their titles or that one of them has been cracked?

How would the companies change the program? Would this require a download to the BD player?

I've been keeping tabs on a few websites in regards to BD+ to see it's effectiveness.

So far it seems a success. AACS m4 has been partially cracked, which means that most new high profile HD-DVD releases have already been cracked and are floating around on the internets.

BD+ titles however are a strong as ever and have not showed up on certain parts of the web. This is a good thing for content protection. It's a monster and no one seems close to breaking it yet.

But to reiterate, a title/game/movie/etc usually makes the most money the first month of release. The longer a title remains unhacked, the less consequence it has with profit loss when it does. If each disk remains protected for just a month, it's done it's job.
