Can someone please explain to me the PS3 Wi Fi functionality???

I hope someone can clarify this for me regarding PS3's wifi capabilities.

I was under the impression that when Sony touted the PS3 has having "built-in wi fi capability," it meant that everything that I would need for the PS3 to be a wifi machine was...you know.... built in! I thought that as long as the PS3 was connected to internet (which mine is through comcast) that it would have the ability to allow my PSP to get online via the "built in" wifi capability of my PS3. Well it seems that this is not the case as I have had no luck in getting an internet connection through my PSP. I thought it would be the same basic idea as when you go to other WiFi hotspots like Starbucks or Panera Bread and get connected.

Now I am completely confused! Can someone here please explain to me in lamen's terms what Sony ACTUALLY means when they say "built in?"

Also, how does this affect the new functions of the PS3/PSP with the 2.00 update?

They mean it has a built in wireless adapter that allows it to connect to the internet via a wireless b/g signal. Just like you would have in a laptop.

It does not serve the purpose of a wireless router or modem.

Built in Wi-fi means that the PS3 has a built in receiver that allows you to access a wireless network that you have set up. Built in means that the wi-fi module is internal and does not require you to purchase an add-on device in order to connect to the internet wirelessly.

The PS3/PSP functions basically allow you to access information on your PS3 and use on your PSP via an online connection.

So in order to access my PS3 content through my PSP from "anywhere in the world" like it says I can do, what do I need?

You need a wireless router. And for the PSP to access the ps3 anywhere in the world you would need to be by a wifi access point.

You don't NEED a wireless router at home to access your PS3 with your PSP. You just need the PS3 connected to the internet, and you need to set up both the PS3 system and PSP system for Remote Play.

However, to access the PS3 while abroad, you WILL need a wifi access point wherever you are located.

i can tell you that before firmware 2.0 you needed your ps3 on and in remote play and hooked up to the internet via a wireless connection. you also needed you psp connected to a wireless connection. then, you could access your ps3 via your psp. if you havn't you need to sync your psp with your ps3 too.

Yes I am able to access my PS3 with my PSP through remote play at home. However the range is pretty dismal. In most cases I cannot be more than a couple of rooms away from my PS3 or it will lose connection.

So let me get this straight. You are saying that if for instance I want to access my PS3 from 15 miles away I have to A.) Have a wireless router connected to my PS3 and B.) Be near a wifi access point?

How much do the routers generally cost?

you need to connect a wireless router to your modem in your house, if you havn't already. this will send out a wireless signal that your ps3 can detect when scanning for one. connect the ps3 to the internet that way. then take you psp, drive 15 miles to the local mcdonalds and connect your psp to their wireless connection there. the two should now be able to "talk" with each other.
