Default PS3 and Dolby TrueHD

Ok. i wasnt sure where to post this because it could also go under Home Theater discussion. Anyway...I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver along with my trusty PS3. The receiver can decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio formats. I have tried to set the PS3 to both Linear PCM and Bitstream outputs, but the receiver will not detect the TrueHD track as being TrueHD. It says it is only Dolby Digital 5.1.

Can anybody who owns this receiver and has gotten the +TrueHD red light to light up on the receiver tell me all of your settings? Or at least the ones that need be changed? Thanks a lot.

PS3 doesn't decode Dolby TrueHD yet. Rumour is that it will be incorporated into a future update. As of right now, the PS3 is able to decode the Dolby TrueHD track as a core Dolby 5.1 track only.

then why does the PS3 have a "TrueHD" logo on it? The PS3 can decode TrueHD and send it as linear PCM, so your ONKYO is not going to see it as TrueHD, it should see it as Linear PCM. Your PS3 should be set to "Linear PCM" for HDMI audio out, also make sure you do the auto-detect or tell the PS3 what your receiver can and cant do under audio settings. In the end, the receiver should see it as PCM. Good luck, and let us know what happens!

ok I set it up as linear pcm like you said and the receiver does indeed see it as a pcm track. When I press the display key on my PS3 remote it says that it is in fact Dolby TrueHD. But this I already knew.

Will the possible future update that would allow the PS3 to bitstream Dolby TrueHD fix this issue between the receiver and the PS3?

from what I read, unfortunately, no. I know, I bought a receiver with decoding capability that I dont use as well. But, who knows, it might happen eventually! They are probably going to work on DTS-HD internal decoding first. It is said that the sound is better if you audio equipment does the decoding, not the player, so, hopefully they do bitstream eventually!

Are there any other standalone players that CAN bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio. I was thinking about getting my 2nd Blu-ray player this Christmas anyway. Any help on this?

Oh and by the way thanks for the quick response before and your advice. You were very helpful.

Thanks again,
CJS
