Default Best Plasma TV??

I'm looking to get a 50in plasma tv for my dad this christmas. I was gonna buy it for myself but I don't ever want to have a better tv than my dad. He's a bd fanatic too! Considering he paid for my college(which I just graduated from in may). Now that I'm makin monies I wanna buy him a 1080p 50inch(ish) plasma tv.

I've read decent reviews on the samsung 5084 which is around 2600 bucks.

What do you guys think is the best? And what is it's price?

Pioneer makes great plasmas (expensive), even their 720p KUROS models are stellar.

Panasonic actually makes a verry affordable plasma with a quality picture.

You are one heck of a good son.

I really like my Panny (see sig) and it has gotten good reviews. I think they are under $3k now.

The Pioneer 50" is also very well regarded but I haven't checked it out myself.

Pioneers are very nice but as was pointed out very expensive.
But whatever you decide to go with a very nice gesture indeed.

the pioneer kuro's are the best but a 50 will be about twice that samsung.

othwerise ur best choice is a 50" 1080p panasonic plasma. the pz700u. You can find it retail for around 2150.

Like I said somewhere else...nothing even comes close to Pioneer Elite Kuro.
Check out the home theater Magazine if you don't believe me

Pioneer 100%. Hands down the best brand for plasma. More expensive? yes, but you'll see the difference when you get what you pay for.

Alright I think I'm gonna get the panny 700U.

It's 5000:1 contrast ratio but the samsung 5084 is 15000:1

What does this mean? How is the panny better? Just better PQ??

I have an older Panny 50" that has been an insane workhorse from PC gaming to movies to regular satellite tv. I have never had a problem with anything.. not even image retention.

If I had the cash I would buy another Panny in a heartbeat (at least 65" with 1080p this time around ).

I purchased mine through the internet back in the day because it was literally $3-4000 cheaper. This place: www.bestbuyplasma.com (not related to Best Buy) was the cheapest by far and had excellent service with it being delivered _early_ and in great shape.

After the nuclear fallout from today's defections, maybe you should complete your dads BD collection with the money you would be spending to get him the TV! Blu-ray is counting on you... don't let what little is left of us 'Blu-ray only' supporters down.

in truth take dynamic contrast ratio's with a grain of salt. especially samsungs who tend to overbloat theirs quite often

Trust me, if I buy this panny(that will support bda) my Dad will be sure to buy 100's of bds over the season(not to mention everyone will be giving him bds as gifts)

Also, ok so I'm about to order it. Panny 700U > Samsung 5084 correct?????

I'll +1 Footloose301's recommendations. I owned both and they were both definitely quality televisions.

I strictly stay with LCD now because of the heat factor.
