Default HD DVD only sold 420k units so far

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...Milestone/1156

If they are only at 420k now, there is no way they sold 90k last weekend, that would mean they were only at 330k before. so with the xbox add on we can look at roughly 700k hd dvd units in homes by dec. thats not going to be good enough when you consider a lot of people now own 2 hd dvd players, hell mike hd over at eproductwars.com is up to like 4 players, a lot only use it for upscaling, a lot of ditched hd dvd in favor of blu-ray, a lot are neutral.

I read on another site that the s300 has sold 100,000 units. The article tried to tout how the a2 sold 90k and thats as much as the s300 total. I was acually impressed that sony has sold 100k since late july Thats pretty impressive for 3 mos of sales at 500 bucks. I know at our store the sony s300 sales very well, and its never mistaken as an upconverting dvd player.

Yeah, the way the article was written seems as if they were calling out Tosh for the 90k number of cheap players sold without actually saying, "We think that number's a lie."

Only at 330,000? I thought they were at 220,000 as of October 1st's HDTV conference in LA.

Nothing wrong with multiple players. I've owned five so far and currently have three hooked up to the three HDTV's in my six person household. Sold off my fourth player and gave my fifth one to one of my reviewers so he could tackle some BD material for me.

That can't be true. But if those numbers are true HD DVD is in some serious trouble.

Nothing pathetic about multiple Blu-ray players, of course.
Four HD DVD players though, that's pathetic.

heres the way i look at it.

420k players now

10k more players sold up until black friday. you'd have to be the biggest retard ever to pay 198 for an a2.

60k players sold over black friday

so going into dec. they are at roughly 500k

they sell 100k more before xmas.

hd dvd standalones are at 600k

xbox 360 add ons are at 250k

total 850k.

blu-ray will have 7 million ps3s on the market right there. just doing the typical 20% gives you a number well into the millions, while standalones should bump the sales up near the 2 million range. and these are tru blu players, not players that some people use just to upconvert.

We have a second blu player but it's hooked up to a 32" 720p in our bedroom. It's to small to matter if its 1080p

I laughed, too.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with owning that many. But I somehow doubt his circumstances are the same as Chris'.

The biggest thing I don't get is how hd dvd thinks they are going to win when they are getting knockedout everywhere else in the world.

Not that I wan't to be a pessimist but I think they are doing quite good. In disc sales Blu-ray is only ahead of HD-DVD with 2:1 margin and HD-DVD only has 1 major hardware company backing them up.

Like it or not I think we are getting closer and closer to the point where HD-DVD is newer going to die.

this guy buys them simply to support the format. hes got one in each one of his condos, so he rarely uses them and its not like he couldn't unhook the one he has at home and take it with him when he goes on vacation. he bought one for his son too and he buys his son hd dvds like the matrix, because he doesn't like those movies, but still wants to support that sh1t format.

Let Doby have his fun.

Seriously, I thought there was a format war going on in America? It seems like most of the HD DVD player owners are actually forum posters somewhere.

its not about hardware sales, its about software sales. just because they flood the market with dirt cheap players, doesn't mean ppl are going to be buying expensive hd dvds. look at eproductwars.com hd dvd really hasn't done anything.

I don't doubt the 90k number at all. Between WM and BB, I'm sure they moved a boat-load of players. The big question is how much software did this move, and will it continue to move software? As stated above, I expect the attach rate of these units to be significantly lower than their historic levels, but you can bet your butt they sold some discs over the last week to new owners!
