Default Vinegar Syndrome's Lost Picture Show Box Set

Quote:
Vinegar Syndrome was founded, in large part, to find, restore, and release lost and otherwise unavailable films. Although these past ten years have seen us grow and expand in all sorts of directions, our sprit and drive to uncover forgotten gems and oddities from the annals of genre cinema have never wavered.

We are proud to present our most ambitious, audacious, and all around home video first, in honor of ten years of Vinegar Syndrome, we proudly present: VINEGAR SYNDROME’S LOST PICTURE SHOW, a ten-film collection of long-thought lost American genre films, all restored from their best-known and surviving elements. This wide-ranging collection covers genres from exploitation to horror to “kids” films to underground vanity projects, and a couple movies so weird they defy description!

Included are: Oliver Drake’s forgotten proto-slasher, THE LAS VEGAS STRANGLER (aka No Tears For the Damned), Larry Crane's murder mystery/nudie, BEWARE THE BLACK WIDOW, Joe Sarno’s stirring seaside drama, DEEP INSIDE, Albert Zugsmith’s notorious bad-taste thriller, VIOLATED!, Walter Burn’s underground sexual freakout, BARBARA, James Newslow’s nuclear holocaust scare film, RED MIDNIGHT, Titus Moede’s ode to forgotten Americana, THE LAST OF THE AMERICAN HOBOES, Carlos Tobalina’s “erotic” morality tale, WHAT’S LOVE?, Charles Nizet’s sex and gore frenzy, THE SEX SERUM OF DR BLAKE (the original cut of Voodoo Heartbeat), and finally Donn Greer’s jaw dropping and unnerving, “kiddie film” and musical, THE RARE BLUE APES OF CANNIBAL ISLE (aka The Pirates of Cannibal Isle).

What’s more is that this release also includes Elijah Drenner’s brand new, feature-length documentary AGAINST THE GRAIN, which examines how genre film focused home video companies have taken the charge in preserving, restoring, and releasing so many works which otherwise might have been lost to time.

This massive collection also comes complete with two thick, fully illustrated perfect bound books of newly written essays and historical analysis covering each of the included films.

Additional info:
  • Limited Edition Multi-disc Region Free Blu-ray set housed in a custom "winged landscape" box with two perfect bound books.
  • Additional information coming soon...

Will pick this up but gutted about Fatal Games selling out. Absolutely no consideration for U.K. customers who have to go to work.

There's a glitch where some pre-orders say Sold Out. If it happens, usually just refresh.

This is likely to have more than 6 thousand copies pressed. No way it's sold out already.

Glad you found a new job.

It was a glitch apparently. Relieved.

Yeah, thanks. It’s just part time at moment, just to keep me ticking over.

My gut is telling me based on the reaction of die-hards here that there will be plenty of copies left come sale time.

This is kind of a good reminder of just how many 60 and 70s films are actually lost. There are probably hundreds more out there like this that no one is even aware of. I doubt any of these are very good, but it's such an eclectic mix. I'll pick it up.

This is a set where most people probably haven't even heard of the movies so it's not an easy sell. If I'm reading it correctly they've sold 630 copies so far (not including subscriptions) but they don't state how many are being pressed. Still it's really nice to get ultra obscure titles released and I wouldn't mind seeing another box set.

They did mention dropping some titles from this set to include better ones, so I wouldnt be surprised to see more if this does ok.

I wonder how they'd hype it?

"You begrudgingly bought our first volume of justly forgotten films, now here are the titles we swapped out because they suck even more!"

"They're terrible-adjacent!"

This is the kind of stuff I want to see! We need some more individual previews though. In any case, I want to send this to my high-intelligentsia cineaste' friends so they can lecture me about "having taste."

I'm curious about the "Steckler adjacent" Titus Moede film. There are three reviews on the IMDB, including one from a child actor who worked on the film. Apparently Coleman Francis plays one of the hoboes!

These look like the kind of films that Mike Vraney was releasing through Something Weird Video, so I'm in!

A few other titles I'd like to see in a volume 2:

MME. OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR (1965)---may be lost but that's the point of this set!

ANGEL'S FLIGHT (1965)---weird movie about a female serial killer, filmed throughout the decaying Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles.

WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR (1966)---the full uncut version has never been released on DVD or Blu-ray.

THE GLASS CAGE (1964)---another sleazy mystery film about two weird sisters and their sinister father. It was the target of a lawsuit.

THE STREET IS MY BEAT (1966)---prostitution exploitation flick directed by Irvin Berwick.

This is a fascinating set and for me this is what Vinegar Syndrome is all about.
Someone over at Classic Horror Film Board dug up an old newspaper article about Red Midnight, interesting stuff but you may need a magnifying glass to read it.

Definitely the most interesting release among the announcements for me!

I have never heard about any of the films, but I guess that is sort of the point.

Yes, I've seen a lot of comments from people complaining about the set and saying they don't want to get it until they can find out more about the films. They seem to totally miss that these are "lost" films and there isn't very much, if any, info about them.
And I don't understand people being so upset that they aren't familiar with the movies when many of these people gave VS $1000 to subscribe for a year's worth of films sight unseen.
