What's the difference between DVD and Blu-ray?

Hi

I was just wondering can you tell the difference between normal dvds and Blu-Ray dvds?
I am buying the samsung P1400 so was wondering how it will look. I have the 40" samsung 1080p also so hopefully they will co-operate very well.

oh god you are going to be blown away. heres the deal, you have a 1080p tv. this means it has 1080 line of horizontal resolution, a dvd simply does not have enough capacity for a transfer that can scan more than 480 of the 1080 lines. since blu-ray has more space a transfer can be put on the disc that can fill up all 1080 lines of your tv. when you multiply it out your going to get about 6x the resolution from a blu-ray disc. your going to get blown away. and i don't mean to insult your intelligence, im just warning you, for most movies there will be black bars on the bottom and top of your hdtv, so don't come in here saying, "why are there black bars" are we will all haze you into our blu-brotherhood. welcome.

A Blu-ray has about 5-6 times the visual information as a DVD, and the sound is often uncompressed and loss-less meaning you get much better sound than DVDs.
If you look at them side by side, there is no comparison, even with an up-sampled DVD image.

It is amazing how good upscaling works for a DVD ... but, yes, there's a big difference. But for those DVDs I can't get on blu-ray yet, my PS3 makes the DVDs I still got look pretty darn good. Like Joel/Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo.

And, uh, don't forget that you have to buy a blu-ray player to play blu-ray.

ok in a couple of words...blu ray dvd's have 5 times the resolution..with that,,u'll see every detail,,hear every sound,,it will feel likeif the events are takin place infront of u in real time....when watching a blu ray movie,,,

just don't forget to use an HDMI cable to get full 1080p.

these are reaaalllyyy expensive in store especially if you get Monster HDMI cable
try this site they sell basically monster cables but before packaging at a fraction of the price.

DVD = NTSC 480i x 720 pixels (PAL 576i x 720)
BD= HDTV 1080p x 1920 pixels




DVD = 5.1~6.1 CHANNELS 480kb/s ~1.5Mb/s lossy sound
BD = High Definition lossless sound up to 7.1 channels 4.6Mb/s-24Mb/s
