Default ratatouille and cars: black bars

i just bought ratatouille and cars and i noticed that they have the black bars running on the top and bottom of the screen. The picture's aspect ration is 2.39:1. On a review on hidefdigest, it says it runs at 2.40:1. Well, other disney releases such as meet the robinsons, chicken little (etc) are running at that aspect ratio and do not have the black bars!

Is everyone's copy of these pixar films like this? (the pixar short films doesnt have the black bars either)

Chicken Little & Meet The Robinsons are in the 1.78:1, not the 2.4:1 ratio which means you will see little or no bars. Those are the director's intended framing ratios.

Not to be rude, but I think you need to read the sticky black bars thread at the top of the forum. The reason they're there is because that's how it was presented theatrically and the way the director wanted. Use the zoom feature if you don't like it.

oh yeah...oops...anyone want to explain to me what the differences are (i just checked my movies and casion royale, 300 are all 2.40:1) between the aspect ratios (ie. 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1)

I actually used to hate them a long time ago, but now I find that I enjoy the movies better with the black bars.

The number basically means ratio of how wide the screen is to how high it is. 2.35:1 means the width of the film is 2.35 times the height.

Here's a good article on it:

Actually it is because you have the FULL picture, without any part of it missing. that full pictures is a very wide rectangle so if they had stretched the picture to cover the bars it would have taken out a piece of the left and right side. So it may not seem so but this is the best possible picture where nothing is lost. just stretch with your ratio options on your TV

The SD version of CARS doesn't show the bars. It goes full screen
