Default PS3 HDD backup, restore, and format?

Hey guys, I have a friend who accidently did a quick format on his PS3, does anyone know how to get the lost date back, some very important photos and videos. ( it says "However, in this case it may be possible for some deleted data to be restored if a specialized tool is used." )

Thank you!

I have never hooked my ps3 drive to my pc so I'm not sure exactly how it's setup or what you can see. I would immediately quit using the ps3. Then I would hook the drive up to a pc and run some data recovery software on it like Ontrack Easy Recovery or something along those lines and pray for the best.

I haven't seen a laptop SATA hard drive connector so cant comment on that part, but you used to be able to get a 2.5" ATA -> IDE converter which you could plug your laptop drive into your pc and see all the data.

The problem with the PS3 drive is I'm not sure if you got it into your PC whether it can be read. Possibly.

You could probably get a hard drive casing that you could fit the PS3 drive into, then connect to your pc with a usb cable.

All you need then is some software like FileScavenger to get all your video's and images back

sounds like a plan, the hard is to find the right cable to connect it to the PC.

there are several free programs that can restore HDD. fortunately, your friend did quick format instead of full format, so there is still chance to recover it.
try www.download.com, and search for the utility

i just called SONY US for help, TWICE, and they were full of it, telling me that there was no way I could get the lost data back.

I love SONY dearly, so does my friends, but just why they have to hire ppl like this work there if they wont do more than just read me from the manual????

Maybe you just can't get it back . . . crazy, I know, but formatting usually does that.

i hooked it up to my pc via sata cable and a power adapter my motherboard is a Abit IC7 Max3 if you needed to know. and i couldnt see any of the files i have on the drive. it needed to be formated to work with the pc. but i also heard that you need a linux based pc to do it.

nah man, there is way to get it back, even if it was a full format it just cost more time and money to do it, as for a quick format, it shouldn't be a big problem esepcially for them who supposed to be experts and helping customers.

really? hmmm, i never thought a quick format could be such a big problem should be quiet easy if u know how to do it, isnt it?

besides u dont need ur computer to recorgnize the drive, all u do is just getting the data back and use it with the PS3 anyway.

well i am confused, if it wasn't for the photos on the HDD i wouldn't care much at all.

i think it is called unerased or something like that. install it on windows PC. you need a drive enclosure (USB) for your PS3 hard disk (make sure it matched the connection) Then you just use it as if your ps3 hdd is external drive, and you can recover it from there. make sure your friend does not do anything to the ps3, as it might cause the data unrecoverable.

The reason the PC is not seeing the data is because it's formated in FAT32, vs NTFS in WIndows. Like stated above, you need to get an external drive enclosure to hook it up via USB. Using a Linux PC would probably be the easiest step from there, but there's software to help - I personally have used Stellar Phoenix in the past with great results, but I don't remember whether it handles FAT32... probably though.

Anyway at best you're going to salvage files off of this drive - there's certainly no 'recovery' per se. After that, you'll just have to transfer them back on while booted into the PS3 via disc, usb drive, or whatever.

A computer with a NTFS filesystem can view a FAT32 filesystem. The majority of usb flash drives come formatted in FAT32. If linux is needed then I'd look for a linux live cd that contains some recovery software so you don't have to actually install linux. I haven't looked at live discs in quite awhile but I'd be really surprised if there wasn't atleast 1 out there that doesn't have some file recovery software etc.

One of the best linux live distros that I know of used to be called the auditor's security collection. It's now called Backtrack.

http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html

Lots of really good tools and they're usually auto and pre-configured so you don't need to go playing around with config files to get the programs working with your hardware.
