Reported on the home page 21/04/2005, it seems that Sony and Toshiba are trying to merge their 2 formsts into a single hi-def disc formay utilising aspects of HDD and blu-Ray. Anyone heard any further news as news was expected by the end of the month.

Toshiba have suggested that they use their format, coupled with Sony's multi-layer technique. In that way the small 15GB per side could be quadrupeled to a much improved 60GB if a 4 layer disc was agreed. Still reckon they should just ditch HD-DVD and go with Blu-Ray. Sod teh extra expense. Early adopters will be prepared to pay a premium for discs at first anyway.

But then HD-DVD has the backing of some of the most important Hollywood movie companies. It's just a shame they couldn't have co-developed a format from the beginning.

the most impportant aspect is the hardware production. With Apple, HP and dell blu ray has it wrapped up in the computer side and all the computers sold by these manufacturers will have blu ray discs by the end of the year. Both Toshiba and Sony sell their notebooks so they'll likely cancel each other out. When you add in playstation, the hardware penetration of blu ray disc will be enormous from the get go, not to mention much bigger pool of companies producing blu ray players and media. Studios are non exclusive in their pledge and they'll take a lot into consideration when they start shipping but mostly hardware availability.
Besides there can't be physical unification of these 2 mediums. Blu ray uses much smaller protective layer to store more data. Only thing that can be changed is names and roylties but for that both sides have to compromise. |
