Default Blockbuster is closing all stores by January 2014

Blockbuster announced Wednesday it's closing all remaining retail locations by January 2014.

The announcement signals the end of an era in home entertainment. The company said there are approximately 300 brick and mortar stores left in the United States that will close.

"This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer, current owners of Blockbuster.

The company will also end its Blockbuster By Mail service by mid-December.

According to the Blockbuster website, the company has nine stores currently open in North Texas. Two of those nine are in Dallas city limits.

Blockbuster was headquartered in Dallas until 2011, when DISH bought the company out of bankruptcy and moved business operations to Colorado.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The final curtain is falling on the Blockbuster video-rental stores that Dish Network Corp. owns in the U.S.

The closures announced Wednesday will affect about 300 Blockbuster locations scattered across the country. Dish Network expects the stores to be closed by early January. Dish Network says about 2,800 people will lose their jobs.

The Englewood, Colo. satellite-TV provider also is shutting down Blockbuster's DVD-by-mail service next month.

Dish Network's retreat will render Blockbuster's once-ubiquitous brand nearly extinct. About 50 U.S. stores operating under franchise agreements will remain open.

Blockbuster's downfall began more than a decade ago with the rise of Netflix Inc.'s DVD-by-mail service, followed by the introduction of a subscription service that streams video over high-speed Internet connections.

Dish Network bought Blockbuster out of bankruptcy court in 2011.

This is truly sad news to hear. So many fond memories of going there, and any other video rental place when I was younger.

Truly an end of a era. Or those old enough to remember going there and renting VHS tapes. And DVD when they first came out.

Digital Sucks. Nothing beats have the actual movie in your hands. Also sucks all those people will lose their jobs.

But I guess there will be deals to be had with BB's still near you.

To me, the worst move they ever made (and it was good for them at the time) was making movies due at noon. They generated so much late fees on those and it's what finally drove me to a new, bustling company called Netflix.

It still irks me to this day, remembering what a money-grabber move that was on their part.

Maybe. But don't rent if you can't either watch it on time or get it back there on time.

Plus look at it this way. There will always be jerks who keep movies out for weeks and even months at a time. So this was their way of trying to keep that down. So if you wanna blame someone. Blame the people who kept the movies out for that long of time.

I hate it too.

There are still a few stores around town (in SC). Every once in a while I see an old movie on TV I want to watch and can go rent the *real* version.

Oh well... Maybe have to sign back up for the Netflix disc plan...

I have a rental place up the street from me. 48 hours.

But pretty soon Netflix will increase their prices as they know people will pay them cause BB isn't around anymore. and if they wanna continue to keep getting this service they will pay what Netflix is asking.

I can't remember the last time I rented a movie, whether it be from a physical store, or redbox. I buy all my movies, so this is really no big deal to me.

Well, it killed Hollywood video and Blockbuster, but you can still rent from Redbox and Gamefly, so physical media is not completely died, but it's getting there.

Just read the news. Too bad, but they lasted a lot longer than I figured they would. Now I have to stop back in before the store closest to me is gone forever.

RIP Blockbuster Video. I will always have fond memories of you...

I really do miss video stores - browsing the shelves, reading the back covers, etc. Redbox is nice and all, but yeah...it sucks that the only video stores left are basically the random and scattered mom and pop shops.
