I can tell you're definitely not from the US. Here that would be a politically incorrect thing to say.

Um, as a Los Angeles resident wtih multiple Mexican friends all I have to say is...wtf are you talking about? When did Mexican become politically incorrect? That most definitely is not how the word Mexican is viewed in the US.

Hispanic, Latin American, etc would be more politically correct.

Probably, but you can say Mexican all day long without fear of a beatdown. It's a perfectly legit word.

To say using the word Mexican is a clear sign someone isn't from the US is pretty ridiculous...cause we US folks say the word all the time.

I don't care how you slice it, if you're from Mexico, you're Mexican.

But Robert Rodriguez was born in Texas

I think Canadians don't but most of the others do. Here's two spanish song lyrics I found:

What the F people.... If you're from Mexico, you're MEXICAN. If your from America (USA) you're AMERICAN, if you're from Canada, you're CANADIAN. This is a commonly accepted form to refer to your country of origin. Anyone saying this is politically incorrect or racist is completely ignorant, misinformed, or far far too worried about public perceptions.

I think the problem stems from one of location and ethnicity.

To call a person who is Mexican a "Mexican" is fine. The PI aspect is when you throw outthe word "Mexican" to mean any hispanic. In LA it's not an issue because most of the hispanics are mexican. In New York and Florida though... it's different.

Plenty of white guys have gotten into fights with Puerto Ricans and Cubans by people calling them Mexicans. As such the PC thing to do is just call them "Latino".

Wanna hear something neat. Louie CK (white/red-haired comedian) is a Mexican. Robert Rodriguez is not.

Technically they are in NORTH AMERICA, but yeah, and no one I have ever met from Canada or Mexico has ever referred to themselves as American. That term is synonymous with people from the USA. (because frankly what else are you going to call them? United States Americans?)

Technicaly they are in AMERICA, as America is the name given to all the New World. The United States is in North America too, so what gives us the exclusive right over the name? If you haven't met people from outside of the United States of America that don't refer to themselves as Americans, it's because you haven't met all Americans . Just because one subgroup thinks of it as the sole designee of the name of the group doesn't make it so.

(And "frankly what else are you going to call them?" is not a justification for us to assign us a name that designates every member of a group . Americans from the United States, or United Statians, might been a more accurate term )
