Default The Predator (2018)

Fox Rebooting 'Predator' With Shane Black

The "Lethal Weapon" creator and "Iron Man 3" director will write the treatment and is attached to direct the project which could relaunch the sci-fi action franchise.

Update:

Exclusive: Shane Black Says His PREDATOR Film Is a Sequel, Not a Reboot

Quote:
Last night, news broke that 20th Century Fox was reviving its Predator franchise with Shane Black attached to direct and write the treatment, while Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad) would handle scripting duties. While it didn’t come as a surprise that Fox wanted to put together another entry in one of its staple film series, it was excellent to hear that Black, who wrote and directed Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, would be steering the ship. A veteran screenwriter, Black has developed a signature tone and style that is a welcome reprieve from generic studio actioners, and he proved himself to be a strong director with the incredible Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang then showed he could handle a massive budget on Iron Man 3.

While Black’s Predator film was initially reported as being a reboot, we recently got in touch with the filmmaker who clarified that he and Dekker are actually envisioning an “inventive sequel” with this iteration, which is to say it’s really not a reboot at all. Hit the jump to read on.

While the initial report said that Black’s new Predator film would be a reboot, Black tells us that he and Dekker see the project as definitely not a reboot, “As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway,” Black said, adding “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

More often than not, a reboot is a lazy way of avoiding the hard work of coming up with a new idea, and instead choosing to use the blueprint of what came before. What Black and Dekker have planned for Predator, however, sounds like something fresh yet in step with the spirit of the original films, and that’s worth getting excited about. Just exactly what portions of the Predator mythology will be mined for this new film are under wraps for now, but I’m eager to see what surprises Black and Dekker have up their sleeves.

Sure. Why not. Black was around for the original, why not see what he can do with the series behind the scenes now?

If Black is behind it then I'm all for a reboot.

Wasn't the 2010 film Predators suppose to be a reboot aswell? I would have like to see where they went from there.

We had a decent reboot a couple of years ago, I don't know what Fox think they'll get by doing another one so soon.

It was reboot/sequel. They fully referenced the first film in it. Plus they tried to get Arnold back.

I'm all for seeing where this goes though. It could be good done well. Most people forget, out of five movies featuring the Predator creature, only one is really any good. Another was decent. The rest weren't great at all. So it's not like the series has a great track record outside of the first one. The sky is the limit.

Also, the term reboot is thrown around way too much now. This will probably be more sequel than reboot, much like the last one that Rodriguez produced.

They probably figure "Oh, that wasn't a official one"

In all honesty, if Shane Black is directing I'd watch it. I've enjoyed everything he's done (that I've seen), even Iron Man 3

Why "reboot?" Why not just make a new Predator film?

I just hope they keep the original look for the most part of the actual PREDATOR. That to me is too iconic to mess around with.

Like I said above, they throw the term around WAY too much now. I bet it's just a new Predator film, that's part sequel. The term is becoming poison.

If it bleeds, we can kill it.

Black also co-wrote The Monster Squad. Which for the last so many years has been in developmental hell for a remake)

Ironically, once Arnold is the only one left on screen versus the Predator, the movie shifts from R to PG-13.

My first instinct is like Kaiju's like usual. But if done right, a Predator in 2016 or whenever could be downright badass if the right person is helming it (no John Moore's please). I didn't take to Iron Man 3 at all, I view it as possibly the worst MCU movie but that's just me, but I do like Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Does this mean Predator will take place at Christmastime? I know it takes place in the jungle, but imagine a winter set movie, an image of a Predator in the snow. Yeah, that's f*cking awesome. You could have some scenes in both the forest and in the city (think concrete jungle like the video game). Oh man, that could be really something. I'm getting ahead of myself.
