Default Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Paramount+ just launched in the UK and I was eagerly awaiting this show.

Is anyone else watching?

I tried watching Discovery and Picard, but just couldn't make my way though it. I was also looking forward to a return to a more optimistic Trek like in the 1960s, episodic.

So far, three episodes in and I have to say I absolutely LOVE it. Anson Mount is just so good as that typical American hero who's likeable and calm under pressure, reminds me of Kirk in some ways but making it his own part. I also like Ethan Peck as Spock, as I think he's the best casting for Spock so far but everyone is shining so far. I'm glad to see initial episodes give each character their own turn in the spotlight and for characterisation, something Discovery didn't do for me.

It’s incredible! I had the same issues with the two prior series on P+. I’m caught up & absolutely adore the new series. The best Trek since TOS (in my opinion) and a definite return to Roddenberry’s core tenets!

I have not liked what I have seen of Discovery so much so that I have not even watched Picard. I did watch both seasons of Lower Decks and they were fine. But I have to see that this show is outstanding can not wait for the next episodes.

There is, but isn't that for US viewers? In the UK we're on episode 3 and in the US I think you're up to at least episode 8. I need to avoid spoilers!

Totally agree. Fingers crossed it continues. I'm already looking forward to owning this on blu-ray.

Silly question perhaps, but do we know when each new episode drops for the UK? I thought I read every Thursday but that may have been for the US.

Just finished watching the latest episode for us in the UK - episode 4 - Memento Mori (wasn't that the title of an X-Files episode as well?).

BEST...EPISODE...YET.

My favourite episode of Star Trek is probably 'Balance of Terror', certainly my favourite episode of the original series. I also love the film Wrath of Khan. I felt there were call backs and parallels to both in episode 4. However, what I didn't expect was just how well layered the episode was in terms of plot points. When you expected one thing to be resolved, another problem presented itself, then another (in a classic Trek episode, they would probably have rested on a couple) but this episode kept going and going.

Also, Captain Pike - my goodness you can't just help but love him and his optimism. I've missed that in Trek.

Yes, it was also the title of an episode from The X-Files' fourth season.

Why the hell do we only have the first four episodes? There have been NINE so far.

There's a Noonien Singh aboard? That's surprising. Kinda messes with continuity, doesn't it? I mean ya'd think once Khan comes aboard and his full name is discovered that someone would point out how there used to be a crew member by that name.

"Screw General Order 1." Seems every Starfleet Captain loves screwing General Order 1. "Go to war with each other or join our Federation of Planets." Hm. Those are their only two options? Seems to me like they could make peace with each other without necessarily joining the Federation.

To ensure that their primary rule is never violated, Starfleet Council just renames it? "Oh yeah, sure, General Order 1 was violated but that's not our primary rule. Our primary rule is the Prime Directive (the exact same thing), and that's unbroken."

The last few lines of episode 1 were some of the worst dialogue I've ever heard in Star Trek. I mean ever. The helm officer asks what their mission is so Pike recites the opening narration?! And Uhura says, "Cool."?! Oh good god... Going into episode 2 now. Hope there's better to come.

  1. They establish La'an's link to Khan at the start, so less need to mention it again.
  2. Maybe they don't mention it for La'an's protection.
  3. Is La'an short for La Khan?

Of course, because trolling is defined on this site as expressing any negative opinions.

1. How do they establish her link to Khan at the start, other than her name? The Eugenics Wars are mentioned but there's no mention of Khan.
2. OK.
3. Maybe.

I'm really liking episode 2 right now. To me, it's a vast improvement over episode 1 and feels much more like classic Star Trek. A very pleasant surprise. But the way the landing party's figuring out the alien language is, to me, way too similar to how the Discovery crew figured out how to communicate with the 10-C.

YES! That was much better! That was classic Star Trek! Now I'm really looking forward to the next two episodes. Still things I didn't like, though. How the musical communication was too much like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, how informal the bridge crew is, Spock's laugh (that was just stupid), and how Pike was able to call up information on the exact people he wanted at the end without giving the computer any more than just their names. No one in that century shares the same name? I keep getting emails meant for people who share my name. But other than those faults, this episode just felt great. Really well written. Bring on episode 3.

OH, you meant in episode 3. Well that's not at the start. I'd assumed you meant in episode 1.
