Default PS3 Newbie - SACD help please!

Hi, just got my PS3 last week and have been getting to know this great machine ever since. One dilema I'm having now is with sacd playback. I have the PS3 connected via hdmi to the Onkyo 605 and the hdmi out on the reciever to my sony tv. The problem is that I can't get any sound unless the tv is on. Why is that? I have another dvd player connected via rca jacks to the reciever and it outputs sound, as it should, without the tv on. Is this something to do with the copy protection in sacd's or am I missing some setting that should be changed? Thanks for any help.

What would happen if you turn everything on and play the SACD, thne as the SACD is playing, you turn the TV off?

I know for a fact that SACD playback on the PS3 is not automatic, since you have to choose which layer you want to play (CD, SACD stereo, SACD Multi). To choose, you have to be in the XMB.

It might be a handshake issue. How can you tell what you're listening to without the TV being on, since the PS3 doesn't have an external display like a standard SACD player?

Wel, once I navigate to the cd and start I turn off the tv as I prefer my own lighting without the PS3 screensaver. I think I could eventually remember the steps to get to the disk without having the tv on.

I thought Writesimply might help out with this one as he answered a few sacd questions for me in the spring when I got an Oppo 970 for sacd use. At that time I had no hdmi amp so had the hdmi connecting the player to the tv and then sound via the optical cable to the amp. I wasn't really impressed with the sound and now I know it was probalby only 2 channels being simulated into 5 channel sound by the reciever. The other night I listened to some Genesis saccd with PS3 and what an amazingly glorious sound that was. Now, if I could just do it without the tv on I'd be a happy camper.

It's because the HD Sound goes thru the HDMI - Not Optical or Analog Cables - Time to update the Receiver that has HDMI connections - $$ makes the world go around - lol

Check the first post again and you'll see that I have updated - the bit about the tv and optical was my first and only connection option.

Thanks man for the link - I registered and checked it out - no answer to this problem but I did learn how to play DTS-Cd's!

Default Figured it out!

Finally got this issue settled. I went into the setup menu of my Onkyo 605 and selected "NO" for hdmi output and now the PS3 plays SACD without having the TV on. Guess it was an HDMI handshake isssue.
