You can certainly connect the PS3 to a standard definition TV if you choose. Obviously you won't be getting as good of a picture as you would on an HD set, but a blu-ray movie will look like a DVD with a good transfer.

it all depends on your cables. if you use rca cables it will look like crap if you use s video it will look like crap & if your tv has component inputs on it as most newer standard tv's do you can use component cables & it will look like crap but less crappier than the first 2.

yes it will look like a DVD no better. if you have component hooked up for a DVD player then get component cables for the PS3. if S-video then get S-video cables for the PS3. try not to use the RCA's it comes with.

the only bad thing is, a normal DVD player will look good with Composite or S-Video cables, i found my PS3 (when playing DVDs) looked worse than my DVD player using Composite and I had to hook my PS3 up to my SDTV with Component cables to get a comparable picture quality on the PS3.
I got a HDTV so problem solved! |

I actually have personal experience with hooking up a Blu-ray player to an SDTV as my mother just wanted to be able to borrow my Blu-rays since she can't borrow DVDs anymore. Menus and graphics and such look terrible with the downconversion, but the Blu-rays themselves look better than any DVD would. Depending on the size of your TV, you would still have compression artifacts and such with a DVD that don't exist with playing a Blu-ray on an SDTV. There are, of course, possible effects from the downconversion, but I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with almost everything above. It doesn't look MUCH better than DVD, but it DOES look like a very CLEAN, and SHARP DVD. I had compared both reservoir Dogs and The Last Waltz on a 13" tube TV and could STILL see a difference... but DO use an s-video cable if you can.

if you are buying an hdtv 720p samsung. Then it would probably help to find one that had hdmi cable as thats 1 wire all together... but if the tv that's in your price range only has component cables then use that... as for your non hdtv, its not going to be terrible it just wont give you any benifit of what blu-ray has to offer, it'll just be like watching a regular dvd.

This idea that Blu-Ray won't look good on 720p sets smaller than 32 inches is ridiculous. Sure, you will notice more difference on a larger screen that is 1080p (Blu-Ray's native resolution) but there is still a distinct noticeable difference between Blu-Ray and standard DVD on smaller 720p sets.

sorry for posting again an obvious question to you guys(am new with this bluray thing)but i know you need an HDMI cable to connect your bluray player to your HDTV but if you have a playstation 3 and the HDTV so do you still need the HDMI cable?

The PS3 ships with a composite cable that you can use if you must. However, you should definitely get an HDMI cable and use that instead of composite if you have the capability to do so.

Got a new PS3 last night. Hooked it up to old SVGA projector. Tried to play a BD. It said it must be sent through an HDMI cable. Any workarounds?
Most threads claim HD signal can be sent to SD displays, but guess times have changed. This true? http://www.afterdawn.com/news/articl..._via_component |
