I watched this as an adolescent and liked it but I think I'll leave that in the past and wait for del Toro to bring on the new film!

I remember that one. Never really liked it because I thought the animation wasn't very good. I did like Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings. Great animation.

Yeah, I loved this film and the follow-ups. I watched them plenty of times as a kid and have DVD copies somewhere. Nice.

I have them, and Bakshi's movie on DVD. I love them all, and would love to see them on Blu as well.

I love that version! That's how I was introduced to The Hobbit! One of my teachers showed that film to us as a treat in grade school. I'd never heard of Tolkien or Hobbits before that. That movie made me want to read the book, which I fell in love with.

Me too. I got the book from the library just a few days later too since I liked it so much. I have it on DVD now. A Blu-ray version would be welcome.

Sorry to bump this thread after 3 years, but I just saw the film for the first time on DVD last week and really enjoyed it.

I think this year would be a great opportunity to release this Rankin/Bass classic on Blu-ray, with Peter Jackson's live-actioon film coming out in December. Either that or next year when the live-action version is released on Blu-ray. I know Warner Bros. released Ralph Bakshi's animated version of The Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray in 2010 to coincide with the the live-action film's Blu-ray debut, so hopefully they do the same this time around. It'd be great to get Rankin/Bass' The Return of the King on Blu-ray, too.

I wish we could get some news on this!

As for the DVD releases, does anyone know what the best version is? I've heard that the Warner release has NO sound effects in the audio track. Does the cheaper Movies on Parade version sound any better?

Hopefully we get this when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits Blu-ray. Studios seem to like putting out a related catalog title with new releases.
